I believe Litex's offense will start working and that Veris will get quite a handful, but instead of chasing a high handicap, I suggest a clean sheet, that should go through without a glitch. The difference in quality is huge and I doubt the visitors will attack too much, and if they do attack, they will take things slow, through their veteran Frunza. The Bulgarians have gotten a clean sheet in last 7 out of 10 home games, they added Frenchman Mendy to their organized defense and they will be a tough not to crack even for bigger opponents. The visitors can get a lucky break from a set piece, but the odds of that are certainly not over 50% as these odds suggest. Details

Apart from the third period during which they conceded 30 points, the Israelis played very good defense in the rest of the game against France. They did great in the first round when the Poles were left with only 49 points. I expected Poland to impose their fast rhythm in that match but they didn't and missed many chances and the Israeli defense certainly definitely deserves some credit for that. To get back to France, Israel played a 138-point game there, but with 45 points in the third period. Other than that, it was a total under game. Today they're facing what I believe is the best defense of this tournament. The Russian machine has been grinding everyone in their path with their defense. They stopped France at 65, Bulgaria at 64. The Russians aren't too good in offense as I said yesterday and I'll just repeat their figures in last 10 games: 141 (Bulgaria yesterday), 131, 130, 132, 129, 160 (Turkey), 124, 139 (Poland), 119, 108. Israel's totals are 138 (France, previously explained), 123, 133, 145 (Turkey), 115, 133, 122. Two overs in 7 matches. Details

It might seem like an illogical pick at first, but let's put things into context. Serbia can do with any kind of win against Sweden to get through to the next round, and I don't think they'll break their legs to score as much as possible and create a big difference in points. They announced rotations and that they'll use players with lower minutes spent playing more. Even though Serbia have 12 good players, some of them are better than others, so the starters getting a break could blunt the Serbian blade. The Swedes showed their problem is exclusively psychological, so when they start scoring, and hold the game a bit longer, like against Germany, then they don't look bad at all. Not defensively, not offensively. A minor minus for this bet is the Swedish back Lofberg's injury, but that's why the medium stake. Details

This group is the "Group of Death" and every ball will matter here, let alone sets or points. It's interesting to note that these two teams played in qualifications in Dunajvaros and Serbia won after 5 sets. In comparison to that game, Finland have bolstered their ranks with their best player, receiver Sakari Makinen, while libero Mutka and middle blocker Kaislasalo played the World League in the meantime. That should be one bonus for Finland, especially after Makinen's return who's one of best players in this generation. Serbia's generation is not as good as they used to be, but some of their players have improved. All in all, I expect a very tough game, Makinen is a huge asset for Finland, who I believe are the better team here. The home court does represent an advantage but Finland have already beaten them in Serbia (cadet EC 2 years ago) and Serbia barely beat Finland without Makinen in Dunajvaros. I expect Finland to get their vengeance, the odds have a good value as I don't see any advantages for Serbia besides home court. Details

A match between Denmark and Russia should offer the gold medal winner. They're the national teams that have been dominating this generation for years, and their match will the culmination of their rivalry. They played a few evened out matches in the past, but I think Russia are a big favorite today. A lot of Russian players are the seniors in handball, they play important positions in the three biggest Russian clubs (Lada, Zvezda, Volgograd), and some of them are even among the first seven. The width of the lineup that Krilenko can rely on can't be compared to any other team in the tournament, and that's the biggest card the Russians have. It's impressive how easily they crushed Sweden and Netherlands. They were especially impressive against the Dutch where it seemed like they could have won by 20 if they had to. Denmark have big quality without a doubt, they showed it in the last matches, but it doesn't seem like they can play against the Russian maximum. Eriksen's team's bench isn't as wide, and it's a big question whether they can keep up with the high Russian rhythm for the whole 60 minutes. The Russian coach is absolutely self-confident and points out that no team in this championship can defeat his. I'd agree with that, Denmark can only get a chance if Russia play worse than they can, but if they play their best, they'll win this by 4-5 goals difference. Details

After all the struggles, it may not seem logical to go for a handicap on Greece but I think it's time for a good game from them and their opponents are ideal. Greece got away against Hungary, who are a compact team with strong defense, good organization and much stronger forwards than Britain. That's also one of the reasons why Hungary limited the Brits to 44 points. Now we have an interesting situation - the Greek forwards are much stronger and taller than the British and coach Missas practically rested their main man Bochoridis who played for only 20 minutes, although it was more due to his poor start of the game than due to rest . One could see that Bochoridis was unmotivated. Missas was very unhappy with their 1-on-1 defense and that's a crucial thing for today. The game is very important as a defeat would compromise their place in the next round and the points, so there will be no margin for error. A win will see them through, they will have two days off and a good preparation for Serbia and probably Slovenia and Spain. They are stronger than the Brits in every possible way so this cannot end with under 10 points for Greece. Details

France are known for being a defensive team, they built that reputation with years, but in this championship, they went over the set margin three times already. Against the slow Russians, against Israel, and the Bulgarians, but that's not that surprising. This last one is one of the main reasons for this pick. France showed against Vezenkov and his team that they can and will accept the faster game when the opponent asks for it, and Poland base their game on transitions and faster and shorter attacks. They went to 162 points against the Bulgarians, and it didn't take much for them to go over this margin against the Israelis, they were left with 123 in the end, but had 14/54 field goal! It's not realistic to expect them to have such a bad shooting night again, and with the French's normal shooting night, this should go over. By the way, I definitely have to add that France lead by Dallo as the point guard are looking to end the offenses in the first wave after the defensive rebounds, in the first 5-7 seconds, and if that doesn't work, they play the set offense, one of the reasons why they're more offensive than the previous years. Not much to say here, these two teams played at the cadet EC last yea and both games ended in the fifth set. I expect the same for today, Russia are favored here without a good cause as they are the hosts. Germany have confirmed their quality here against the reigning European champions Poland. Russia started playing better in the second half of their game against France and both teams are ready for these qualifications. The game is very important and both teams will do anything to win. This definitely shouldn't be a one-way street and so an over seems like the logical choice. Both matches played last year went into the fifth set after a huge battle and only 1 out of 8 25-point sets ended by a point difference of over 3. The margin is low and this win should go through in four sets if the average result is 25-20. Considering everything, that's a very plausible scenario and the margin should by at least 4 points higher. Details

Greece are regarded as the favorites based on their previous results, they took the fifth spot last year on cadet EC. The came to Switzerland with a weakened squad, without their best player Strantzali, receiver Psoma, their first setter and important central blocker. So, 4 key players missing and they even don't have their reserve opposite as she missed the start of preparations. Greece have also had messy and short preparations, which is not good for them as their squad isn't too organized and the players aren't familiar with each other. This means they can't be such strong favorites. Croatia are in a completely different state of things, they have had ideal preparations and have improved their form game by game. They paid special attention to this first game against Greece. The weakened opponents are a chance for Croats to get a win that would put them one step closer to a place at the EC. They have the quality, the mood in the team is great and they can't wait for the tournament to start. An advantage for Croatia lies in the fact that they know more about Greece than Greece know about them. Details

I have been saying for some time that Martin's form is improving. He has gone astray this season but he's a player that had 40 challenger wins last season. He played well last week even though the results don't show it and he continued with good performances here. He crushed Mesaroš, beat Brkić without losing his serve and he's clearly enjoying this tournament. Last year, he won this tournament, which is another things that speaks in his favor. Ramirez-Hidalgo did beat Volandri but the Italian is in a disastrous form and after his match against Pospisil in Round 2 I wasn't too impressed and I wanted Martin to go through so I could bet on him in this match. The Spaniard barely beat the Czech player who's been struggling for the past two months. In my opinion this is 60-40 match in Martin's favor, and the odds are set for 50-50. It's all a result of Andrej's poor season, but his form is getting close to that of last season and I can't ignore that. Ramirez-Hidalgo is outside Top 250 and is nothing special, so I don't see how he deserved to be regarded so highly. Details

Hardly any team can completely pull themselves together and play their best defense after they were eliminated while being one step away from fighting for the medal. Accordingly, today's match margin is pretty low, especially because France change their tactics as the championship progresses, and rely more and more on the fast center. They went over this margin (52) even against the Brazilians, who play fairly slow, in a match of the more competitive character, while they were even more convincing against Denmark and finished the match with 62 goals. They'll face Netherlands who had a few good defense shows, but when they needed it most. 32 goals against Angola, whom they underestimated a bit, clearly show that they aren't the toughest when they're not motivated, and we definitely won't see them fully motivated today. They showed how easily they can be discouraged against Russia in the quarterfinals, and they didn't play defense after the first ten minutes of that match, which ended with 76 goals. Considering the disappointment they had, we should expect them to continue playing similarly, so 50 goals is really a minimum of the goals this match should have, even though it's more realistic to expect at least 4-5 more. Many thought that the Turks were the candidates to take the medals but they lost all 3 games in round 2 (two against very strong French and Spanish teams) and they are facing a very important match against Greece. If they win, they will have secured their place in Division A and if they lose they will find themselves in a tricky situation in which they have to win the remaining two games. Greece have shown little to nothing so far, they still haven't won a single game and their average is 45 points per game. The Turks have the best defense (51.8 points per game allowed) and it's clear the Greeks have a mountain to climb. On the other hand, Turkey have been far from brilliant in offense and their average is 54.7 points. France play a similarly aggressive game and Greece lost against them by 36-67. They lost against Spain by 39-55 and the Turks went over this margin only against teams like Latvia and the Czech Republic. Turkey's average game is 106.5 points and Greece's 107.5, but when you factor in the importance of this game, this seemingly low margin becomes very solid for a moderate stake. Details

The "normal" handicap for the match between Petkovic and Voegele was 5.5 and it is lower by one game today. I see no valid reasons for something like that, perhaps the bookies saw that Voegele got two consecutive wins and thought it meant something, but I personally don't feel that way. Svitolina was terrible and some of her mistakes cannot be described by words alone. Petkovic has won both of her matches in 2 sets, and even though her match against Cepelova was tight, it showed the quality of both players and Petkovic said that this win meant a lot. She has left a better impression but the most important thing for this is their previous match. At the moment when Petkovic took over the initiative (1st and 3rd set) Voegele could do nothing on her return and the result showed that. Passive approach cost Petkovic the second set and she said before this match that she has to be more aggressive and not stop for a single second. She's left a better impression and is a huge favorite today. Details

I am trying to find a logical explanation for Netherlands being regarded as such favorites but I just don't see it. Australia are a team that plays aggressive volleyball, they have a higher block and a stronger serve and they have the home court advantage. Netherlands arrived to Sydney without their captain Rauwerdink and middle blocker Van Bemmelen but their absences haven't been a problem in recent weeks. Netherlands topped their group but it was a much easier group than Australia's and they still struggled in away games. Australia improved a lot through the World League in terms of tactics and I think they shouldn't be underestimated. It's enough to remember the games against Croatia, Romania and Korea that the Dutch lost to see that Australia can get at least two sets here. Details

Apart from a handicap, I will go for a clean win on Australia. If they beat Canada here, who are without any doubt a better team than Netherlands, I see no reason for them not to win today again. The fans are an important factor and the arena in Sydney has been sold out for past few days. Netherlands with Kooy and Van Gardaren seem decent, but not decent enough for this level. Details
