Atlanta - Cleveland (108:121)

The Cavs having a shooting nirvana

  • Published:

LeBron and his guys have 45.3% three-pointers in the playoff, and looking only their series against the Hawks, they hit 40 out of only 76 shots

When you don't do well with someone, you just don't. That's definitely the case with the Atlanta Hawks who can't remember the last time they've beaten Ohio guys, having a 9-game losing run now. None of those defeats was as powerless as the one on Wednesday, when they were crushed 123-98 in Cleveland. It could've been much worse if LeBron and his guys didn't take their foot off the pedal a bit.

The start didn't make it seem like either team will have it easy, the scoreboard was showing 16-16 mid first quarter, but then the Cavs started crushing it, hitting 18 three-pointers by the half-time, and eight in the second half. That broke the record Orlando Magic and Houston Rockets held so far.

- Tonight was a special night for all of us who played. This league has seen so many great teams, so many great players and great shooters and for us to set an all-time record is truly special - LeBron James said after hitting 27 points (9/15), with four rebounds and five assists in less than 29 minutes.

The Hawks made a few changes on both ends of the court compared to the Game 1. Paul Millsap was trying to slow James down from the start, and they were trying play after play for Kyle Korver who only had one shot from the floor in the first game. It was all in vain because the Cavs just weren't missing their shots. J.R. Smith was in an especially good mood with six threes in the first half, and he finished with 23 points (8/14, 7/13 three-pointers), and Kyrie Irving had 19 points (5/9, 4/5 three-pointers) with six assists in only 22 minutes.

- That was overwhelming. I thought they shot really well in Game 1, but that was amazing - Kent Bazemore thought after hitting only five points (1/7) after having 16 (6/14), 12 rebounds and four assists in the first game.

The Cavs averaged 29.6 three-pointers in the regular part of the season, and 35.7 in the playoffs. That is definitely worth it because they have 45.3% shots, an incredible percentage. They hit 40-of-76 in the series against the Hawks, so no wonder they're leading 2-0.

- When they put those shots down, I don't know if anyone can beat them, to be honest. We were hoping that they'd start missing at some point - Kyle Korver said, after finishing with only seven points (3/7).

Besides the convincing win, the Cavs got a new lineup, too. They played part of the game with a five out formation where Kevin Love (11 points, 13rebounds) and Channing Frye (23 points) took the positions four and five which, combined with the blowout, had a dramatic influence on Tristan Thompson's efficiency. He played 19 minutes, which was less than half of what he played in the first game.

That's just another confirmation for the coach Tyronn Lue - he's got more than enough options to follow the suit of their opponents, but also his own team's momentum. The same can't be applied to his colleague in the opponent team, he's hardly sleeping lightly knowing that his team just can't keep up with the Cavs offensively. True, the Hawks shot eight points more than they allowed from the pain (68-56), but that's only because the Hawks didn't feel the need to force the hoop when they had 54 points more than their opponent thanks to the three-pointers.

- We need to get better in a lot of areas, probably starting with our transition defense. They're making the ball, they're making the extra pass and they're making shots. They're obviously a team that's put together well and we're going to have to very good to change it - the coach Mike Budenholzer said. His team lost ten straight postseason games to the Cavs.
