Can Kielce bring down the favored PSG?

  • Published:

You can't say the Parisians hold a great advantage. They're filled with stars and big names in each position, but Kielce did a perfect season, profiled their game system and they're clearly showing what they want and how to get it. They can definitely make it to the finals

Even though their budget is well over 15 million, this will be the Parisians' first Final Four of the Champions League. It's no coincident that it came at the same time as Nikola Karabatic. The man is a machine and a winner by nature. Something Barcelona were missing to take the title. And we've all seen where Barcelona is without Nikola - in the average zone.

However, Nikola can't do everything on his own. This PSG is something else compared to what he had around him in Barcelona. Starting with Saric, Morros, Sorhaindo... This Paris are playing more for the audience than for themselves. What they've shown a couple of days ago in the Cup finals was a disgrace. No one ever in France, in the Cup finals, didn't allow 38 goals. PSG lost to Montpellier, lost the finals of the Ligue Cup, and now the Cup finals. Enough to show their vulnerable side.

Both of those finals showed how terrible Omeyer is at the goal. And the defense in front of him, of course. In the Ligue Cup he had eight saves and 20% of success rate. Last week his edition was even worse, only three saves.

- True, I wasn't good - admitted the man.

- I'm angry, frustrated that I didn't help out the team the way I wanted to. But sometimes that happens in professional sport.

Le Parisien published how he struggled with a rib injury for around ten says, and Mikkel Hansen said in his defense:

- We brought trouble for him because the defense was non-existent.

Didier Dinart said what many are now expecting...

- Such a day sometimes enables you to come back even stronger. I have no doubt that he will be his true self for the weekend. He's a winner, a machine.

Kielce can definitely stand up to offensive handball and PSG won't win this one with rushing. They have to play top defense, something they haven't been doing during the season. The group they've won in the bast part of the season was won based on others, and not by their game because they were convincingly beaten both in Flensburg and Veszprem, and the beat the Germans in the last round because Vranjes tanked. During the whole season PSG didn't play impressively, not even the two matches against Kiel, and they're up for a tough work here.

For the finals, not to mention the title, they will have to play well above what they've been showing during the season.

- How many times have Paris won the Champions League? Zero. How many times have Paris been to Koln? Zero. We don't need to pretend we're the favorites because we're not - coach Serdarusic took the pressure off of their back, even tough he's also under pressure since nothing has been achieved.

- We have shown this season that we're struggling with the role of the favorites. When we're playing well, then we're the favorites, that's all I can say.

In the end, Henrik Mollgaard said:

- We really studied them well and it's going to be a real fight. We have to play with our heads against Kielce, not just run around and jump around.

Even though they're weaker on paper, Kielce are a complete opposite of PSG this season. They have convincingly won in the championship, convincingly in the cup and they're ready or F4, full of confidence and hope that this year they can make it to the end.

A big contribution to such results is coach Dusebajev for whom many experts say he's Kielce's strongest link. We also have to note that the main skeleton of this team have been together for a couple of seasons now, with minor alterations. That's extremely important because the systematization is at a high level with Kielce. An additional plus is that with Dusebajev, the defense is better, something Kielce were struggling with in the past seasons. Now they can count on that segment of the game as well, even though the goalkeepers are in a weaker shape than before last season's final tournament.

- We're good. Now we just have to give it our maximum, play a good game and head on into the finals - said Dusebajev.

The road to Koln wasn't too tough for Kielce. They fought Barcelona for the leading place in the group, and they didn't get there, which brought them two easy matches against Meskov. The last obstacle were Flensburg where they got a bit lucky, but they passed into the semi-finals definitely thanks to quality.

- If you ask me, I think Kielce will win the title. I don't want to say that Dusebajev is the best coach, but the whole team together with him are very experiences and they'll play wisely. They play the best handball if you ask me. They have a great system, great defense, top wings and counter-attacks, but also team game which can shot out an individual at any time, while PSG rely on Hansen and Karabatic - explained Veselin Vujovic.

To make things better, Kielce really left an impression like they were keeping a secret all this time and that they will show their best game here in Koln.

Today Agunagalde will be especially motivated; he won silver and bronze, but he's yet to see gold.

- We feel very good. We accomplished our goals in the home competitions and we played very good. We worked hard to stay in shape. We know what we have to do and we're fully ready - said the Spaniard.

There should be no doubt that Kielce's defense will harshly keep an eye on Karabatic and Hansen. In the transition, many think the key roles could be played by the goalkeepers. Omeyer is definitely the favorite in the duel, especially since Szmal and Sego don't have too great numbers. This should be a tight match of the semi-finals.
