France - Belgium (79:70)

Winners secure status, defeated get knocked out

  • Published:

France have a 2-0 record against Belgium in this generation; they beat them easily during the summer preparations. Yesterday Belgium almost lost to the desperate Hungary, while France recorded their first win on the tournament against the hosts Finland

A five-game losing run and the shameful playoffs for 13th to 16th place woke up a little bit of pride in France. Despite arriving here with a number of important players, mostly Kaba and Cordinier, no one expected them to be so bad. Yesterday they finally showed they care. They were at 65-51, they allowed Finland to come to 68-60, but they pulled through in the end.

Noua was great - 21 points, 15 rebounds, three assists. With 10-for-18 fro the floor. Tome didn't need to add anything. The left-handed Okobo kept up with him, 23 points and seven rebounds, with five three-pointers and 9-for-17 from the floor. That duo is the best of France on this tournament. Okobo signed a professional contract for Pau Orthez, his three-pointers are 15-for-33 here, he's their best players.

Both played over 30 minutes yesterday, but there's no time to rest. They have another important match with which they can save themselves to a certain extent. It's for the 13th place, which means staying in Division A.

- We need another win in order to stay in Division A. That's very important for us, for France. I was born in 1997, and I want to play again in Division A - Okobo was clear.

This is a match in which winners take all and there's no dilemma that France will be very motivated. They know Belgium very well. Two years ago at EC U-18 they played head-to-head in the playoffs. France won 75-60. They played one match during preparations, by the end of June on a tournament in Troyes. France dominated again with 80-62.

Yesterday Belgium finally felt how nice it is when you grab the rebound from their opponent. With a total of 50 rebounds, out of which 13 were offense, they got the necessary depth and balance in the game. They used that in the best way possible and with their fast basketball beat the weak Hungary.

Finally backs started to play, and Belgium waited for that throughout the whole tournament. Foerts was great with 27 points, out of which six were three-pointers. Belgium can offer such a game against teams like Hungary because they offensively have a lot of space and then they know how to use it. So far they had trouble with strong and aggressive defenses because Belgian backs lose themselves in them, and they simply don't have centers.

Even Lambrecht who is 207 cm tall seems more like a wing, and the whole Belgian game is based on the transition and back shots. Today they will have little space because France's defense is incomparably better than Hungary's, so we'll see how will Belgium's backs look today. This is an important match because only the winners stay in the elite division, so we could be watching a big fight for each point, something Belgium are not used to.

Belgium lost to Sweden by seven, got crushed by Italy and Ukraine, and struggled against the worst team of the tournament yesterday, the Hungarians, who hit 89 points. They've lost by 15 to France two years ago, and by 18 in the qualifiers. This match matters for staying in the division, and in a duel of teams where there's one horrible defense and the other one much better, we have to bet on the one with the defense. The Belgian defense is probably even worse than the Hungarian, even though they're hard to beat in that regard. The French have some good players, much better ones than the Belgians, especially in the paint (Nouo first of all), they're leading in the H2H, and they're very motivated after surpassing the obstacle yesterday when they beat the Finns by 14, getting their first win of the tournament, so now we expect them to calmly secure their stay in the division.
