Rostov - Anderlecht (2:2)

Debutantes Rostov with granite defense vs. a redesigned Anderlecht

  • Published:

Russian Rostov are playing in the Champions League Preliminary Round for the first time, and they are led by the iron fist of coach Berdijev, who got famous at Rubin's bench, while Anderlecht have made some big changes this Summer and it will take time for the new coach Weiler to put it all together

After a surprisingly great last season in which they won the second position behind the Russian CSKA, Rostov are having their debut in the Champions League in the Third Preliminary round against Belgian Anderlecht.

The Miracle-maker in Rostov at Don is a coach from Turkmenistan, Kurban Berdijev, who led Rubin Kazan from 2001 to 2013, and made the small and unknown team from Tatarstan region into Russian Champions twice, and regular participants in the European competitions.

Rostov's success is similar, and Berdijev is a coach with 'iron fist and discipline' who always puts the team ahead of the individual, and defense is the absolute law. He usually uses the old 5-3-2 model, so a line up with a sweeper, but sometimes he uses more modern and defensive 4-2-3-1 formation.

In comparison to last season, they didn't make much changes to the squad, all key players stayed in the club, but some struggled with injuries in pre-season, and this Rostov's first official game of the season.

But there are a lot of experienced players who played in European competitions with other clubs, and Rostov believe that the redesigned Anderlecht are an opponent they can eliminate and get in the play-off for a spot in the group stage.

- Injuries disrupted our plans in pre-seasons, but I believe all players, except young midfielder Ezatolahi, will be ready for this game. The excitement is great because this is their first appearance in the Champions League, and Anderlecht are more experienced - said Rostov's coach, Kurban Berdijev, whose three key players are defender Navas, Midfielder Noboa and forward Azmoun and anyone's absence would be a big minus, but we should mention that the strength of this team is the collective and homogeneous and strong performance.

- Our opponents have the best attack in Belgium and we have to be compact and not let them run forward. We will also try to use their moments of carelessness and look for our chances. We are hoping for a positive result, even though two games are being played and the overall winners advance. I believe that can be us.

Anderlecht were second in last year's championship, and the management made a lot of changes in the locker room after that. The first one to go was coach Besnik Hasi, and then some ten players, among whom is their longtime first goalkeeper Silvio Proto, Filip Djuricic, Imoh Ezekiel, Alexander Buttner, Matias Suarez, Leya Iseka, Anthony Vandenborre, Rafael Ghalardooa...

All lines have gone through some changes, and they acquired some players, like Dennis Appiah, Alexandru Chipciu, Sofiane Hanni and Sebastian be Maio, but it is clear that the new coach, Weiler, has a lot of work ahead of him to get the current team to work well.

Weiler is a 42-year-old expert from Switzerland, he was leading Nurnberg until June, and his main idea is attacking football. Anderlecht were very efficient in pre-season, not only against the weaker rivals, and the game against Rostov is a clash of two different coaching philosophies.

It will be interesting to see who will adjust to whom more, that is will the away team play openly and bravely or will they make more calculations. It would probably be better for them to go after a goal because if they do not score, they will definitely face Rostov's bunker in the return fixture, which Berdijev is looking forward to.

- We have to play the entire game focused from start to finish, because that is the only way we can hope for a good result. We are facing debutantes in the competition, and they are always highly motivated and hungry for success - said Anderlecht's new coach, Rene Weiler, who did not bring their best scorer Stefan Okaku to this game, because they had a verbal altercation.

- Okaka is currently not ready for this game, both physically and mentally, and I brought to Rostov our best 18 players right now and I have confidence in them - said Weiler, and he is also missing attacking midfielder Praet, and defenders Kara and Deschacht, and the away team will have to make a lot of changes in the starting lineup.

- Rostov are well organized, they are consistent and persistent, and they haven't lost at home in a while. They are especially impressive during the set pieces and we have focus on that in defense, even though we want to prove ourselves in the offense as well - said Anderlecht's coach, Rene Weiler, who said they will play in 4-2-3-1 formation.
