RB Leipzig - Schalke 04 (2:1)

A clash of currently two of Bundesliga's most convincing teams

  • Published:

The leaders RB are awaiting Schalke who in the last 12 official matches have 10 wins and two draws

RB Leipzing are a hit team and the unexpected leaders of Bundesliga after 12 matches. Hasenhuttl did a great job in Ingolstadt last season, but he demonstrated his full manager potential by taking over the new first-league team from Leipzig. RB still have to be defeated in the league, and they will host Schalke after an incredible seven-game winning run. They look better and better as matches go on, and in the last round they earned all three points in an uncomfortable away game against Freiburg. Werner was brilliant in that match with two recorded goals, Forsberg with two assises, Sabitzer with a goal and an assist, and midfielder Keita who was already kept being precise in the 2nd minute of the match.

Hasenhuttl knows it won't be easy to continue the winning run:

- Schalke will be our toughest match so far, this is one of the more demanding homeworks we have in the league. They have a very good result run and they're extremely stable. This match will be full of counterattacks, possession control, pressure... We have to win every battle in this game, otherwise it's going to be hard to record all three points in this game. Pressure? No, Bayern are still the title favorites.

Before the match against Schake, Hasenhuttl's biggest problems are injuries of defenders Compper, Gipson, Klostermann and Papadopoulos, and midfielder Bernard is also out. Luckily for the manager, none of these players were among the starting eleven against Freiburg, so it's expected he won't change the line-up this time either.

Schalke started out the season with five defeats in a row, but Weinzierl's team currently look unstoppable and they're already at number eight in Bundesliga. In Europa League, Schalke won in all five matches so far, so they're not interested in the away game against Red Bull Salzburg on Thursday. Their thoughts are pointed to the current leaders of Bundesliga. Schalke are surely optimistic, especially after 10 wins and two draws in the last 12 official matches.

Weinzierl wants championship points against current leaders:

- We want to bring our game style to Leipzig. It's clear there's always a possibility that Bayern won't be on top, but nobody expected that RB will have such an important role to play in their premiere Bundesliga season. Despite their success, our goal is to win all three points.

The away team will again be weakened by the long-absent defenders Coke and Uchida, and main forwards Embolo and Huntelaar. The third classical forwards Weinzierl doesn't have available is Di Santo, but he didn't practice with full intensity during the week, and he probably won't play. At the top of the 4-2-3-1 offense, Weinzierl could again put Choupo-Montigo.
