Lowen without Petersson, Magdeburg with some questionable players

The German handball was opened last weekend with some Cup games and some surprises, like Gummerscbach knock-out. But, the official start of the season is today in Stuttgart where Lowen and Magdeburg are set to play it out for the Supercup. It's good to see some changes and not just Kiel and Flensburg fighting for this trophy. 

- We haven't won many titles yet and that is why this game means a lot to us - Lowen's coach Nikolaj Jacobsen said. 

They didn't change much from last season. They didn't acquire any new back players, not counting ABt, who has been around for years. Kneer, who hasn't played much stayed on the team but Genseheimer, their top player, has left. Palcka, Sigurdsson and Manskov are interesting acquisitions. Lowen's greatest advantage is good game organization which they displayed during preseason as well.

Pekeler wasn't there because of Rio and he is one of the key players. Right back Peterson will be out for a while, and Reinkind might play today. The new team captain and leader is Schmidt, the top middle back in the league. Since he doesn't play defense, he cannot be compared to Duvnjak. He even played defense in preseason but the coach said he is too important for offense so someone else will ahve to play defense instead of him. If something happens to Schmidt, Lowen will be in trouble. 

Magdeburn, on the other hand, are to play this game after a struggle with Nordhorn last weekend in the cup. Coach Wiegert didn't want to talk about them not being complete. Magdeburg have not done well when it comes to efficiency but they got through and then trashed a lower-league team by 17 goals. Lowen had easier opponents in the cup and did those games better. There is no point in talking about that, but it is good to note that Reinkind played. 

Magdeburg have been without the injured Lemke and goal keeper Green the past few days. Neither are seriously injured and there is a chance both might play today. If Lemke doesn't play, Musa-Van Olphen-Bagerstedt will make the defense while Quenstedt should be on the goal. 

- They played the Olympics and they+re away from the families. That was visible in the Cup. We want to be successful against Lowen both in the Cup and the league - coach Wiegert said.

- The Supercup doesn't have as much significance to us but we want it.

Two head-to-head games from last season were exciting. Lowen won in Magdeburg 24-23 even though they were 8-3 down and 27-25 home.
