Meshkov Brest - Pick Szeged (25:23)

Their duels so far this season have been tough and close

  • Published:

Szeged won 22-20 end August in a Kanjuža tournament, and 24-22 at home in the Champions League. They're coming to Belarus without Thiagus and Boka, and Meshkov are missing Atman and Nikulenkau

Meshkov did a decent job in the Champions LEague so far. They were pretty evened out in all their games, even against the group favorites. They had a nice advantage over the last three teams, and their getting placed to the round of 16 shouldn't be questionable. They'll try to move ahead in the table a bit more till the end, but the way things are right now, their opponent will be one of the three Veszprem, Flensburg, Kiel. That fight in the second group is pretty evened out, but they're definitely top teams and Meshkov are going to have a tough task.

- I think there weren't many who thought we'd have nine points by Christmas before the competition began. We're standing pretty good, we only lost three games - Bebeshko was content with their efficiency so far.

- Still, we can't relax. The results so far do boost our confidence, but we have to forget about them and go after the win in every game, that's what we've been doing in the fall.

The Belorussians started the second part of the season with a loss in Celje in the SEHA league, threatening their placement to the Final Four. Zagreb's defeat in Skopje yesterday is a good thing for Meshkov, but things are still pretty complicated.

- We played the worst game of the season. We weren't mentally ready, we missed a lot of clear shots in the first part, and it's hard to win like that. The players were absent for a long time, they came back with certain problems and we're at 80% right now - the coach added.

Meshkov didn't have Nikulenkau and Atman again, the latter one should stay out for a while.

- We played some games before the break without them. True, the other middle backs aren't as mobile and aren't as good in the one-on-one game. The offense is a bit slower - Bebeshko pointed out, and added that he won't count on Atman in the next three CL games.

Their first game against Szeged in Hungary looked similar to the one in the pre-season in August. It was a very evened out and tough game where Atman lead Meshkov with four goals.

- We played much better defense in that game than in some other games, but what's it worth when we lost the game. Still, we managed to push the game we wanted to play for the most part and we'll try to do it again - Bebeshko added.

Considering all the changes in the roster last summer, it was hard to expect Szeged to be fighting for the top in this group. Still, after nine rounds, Kielce are the only ones ahead of them (point more), and they're still ahead of Vardar and the German defending champion Lowen, so everything's still possible. They've got a pretty tough schedule till the end - playing away in Poland and Germany, at home against Vardar, and this game in Belarus definitely won't be easy either. Still, they're in control.

Like any other top team, Szeged had a few players at the WC, the Hungarian quartet and the pivot Gaber, the backs Thiagus and Gorbok. They played three practice games without them, with one win and one defeat against Nexe in Našice (29-21 win and 24-31 defeat), and they beat Vojvodina 35-27 in Novi Sad.

They started the second half of the Hungarian championship with an easy win against the weak Mezokovesdi, without Obranović and Sierra who will be there today. On the other hand, Thiagus and Boka are still recovering, so they stayed in Hungary. Szeged took a charter flight to Brest.

- The guys are aware of how important the game is. The key will be in the defense and finding the right rhythm. Meshkov are a great team with good shooters - Pastor pointed out.

This game is extremely important for Szeged. They could get the first place, and if they win this, they will decide about it in the last two rounds against Vardar and Kielce. Second place is pretty important too because in the other group, the fifth place will be held by one of the three - Veszprem, Flensburg or Kiel, and sixth between Wisla or Bjerringbro. The first place in the group means the quarterfinal, the second better chances for the quarterfinal, the third much lower chance for the quarterfinal.
Szeged allowed over 27 goals only four times in 32 games this season, the championship against Kristianstad (28, hit 33), where they took control early on, then Lowen who are careless in this competition (28-28), against the defending European champion Kielce (27-29), and the road game against Vardar who are better and faster than Meshkov (27-30). So, only four times over, against better teams, and just a little bit over the margin. All of their road games were tough, and there's only one over, against Vardar. What's most important is that considering the most relevant games, against Celje and Zagreb, with Atman and Nikulenkau injured, they were always great defensively. The fast Celje were left with 25 and 22, Zagreb with 24, Meshkov 22 in Hungary, and 20 in Kanjiža (basically Szeged playing at home). They were never even close to allowing this much in the championship, and always left their rivals with low numbers - Veszprem at 23, Tatabanya at 18 and 23, Csurgori at 23.
Atman means a lot for Meshkov, Nikulenka brings more width than quality, and they can rotate two lineups 15 minutes each. I doubt Bebeshko will give a lot of time to Ostroushko and Kulak. Tioumentsov and Jamali are more likely to play the left and middle backs, and Bebeshko said that this lineup is slower, less mobile, not as good in one-on-one game, and that they're at 80% of their abilities because of many players being absent. They went over this margin in the CL against Celje and Kristianstad who are weaker than Szeged, and are much faster and softer defensively at the same time, and Lowen who used half their strength here. What seems relevant is 22 against Szeged, 27 against Zagreb, 24 against Kielce at home and 27 against the fast Vardar on the road. They never had to play without these two same players at the same time, though.
