Rostov - PSV (2:2)

Rostov already demonstrated their strength against a great Dutch team this season

  • Published:

Rostov haven't been beaten in 24 consecutive home games, and that makes them feel optimistic before PSV arrive

Rostov with the coach Berdyev were a hit team in Russia last season, but then they lost the champion title in an evened out fight against the powerful CSKA Moscow. Berdyev being a great tactician helped Rostov eliminate Anderlecht from the Champions League qualifiers, but then he got a bit greedy and accepted Spartak's rich offer, so he left the team.

Berdyev was succeeded by the assistant Kirichenko who helped Rostov eliminate Ajax, and then another last year's assistant Daniliants took over and Kirichenko went back to being assistant because he doesn't have a UEFA licence. Berdyev's influence is still strong since he came back to Rostov as the club's vice-president after the failed coach transfer to Spartak, so he's still making the key moves when it comes to assembling the team.

Rostov played their first and historic Champions League duel in a tough away match in Munchen. Bayern easily beat them, scoring five goals, and Rostov just lined up defeats after that - in the championship against Krasnodar, and in the Cup against Dynamo Moscow.

Rostov ended the losing run on Saturday by beating Lokomotiv Moscow at home. Their home field is a big advantage for Rostov because they didn't lose a single game there in the last 24 duels played, so they definitely don't lack optimism before hosting PSV.

Kirichenko announced this game:

- We had the usual practices, Berdyev has been coaching the team the entire week. I hope the stadium will be full because every match matters now. I don't know why we keep being criticized that the only duel we can get points in is against PSV. I've seen the match between our next opponent and Atletico, and I think PSV could've gotten a positive score. It's true that we had a tough game against Bayern and we couldn't deal with the excitement. We didn't have too much time to calm the opponent down, but we got ready for PSV. Let's not forget they're a team that passed the group phase of the Champions League last season.

The hosts have no injuries or suspensions to deal with. Daniliants is expected to send out the 5-4-1 formation with Azmoun in the offense. Rostov's main strength definitely lies in their firm and disciplined defense, so Daniliants's main task is to make sure they keep the net intact in this duel.

Atletico have been in the top of the world's football in the last years, but PSV expected a lot more from their home match, than the minimum defeat they got. PSV gave Atletico a hard time last season, but this time, they had no say in the final result. That defeat obviously affected PSV players because they got beaten in the home match against Feyenoord after that. They did win the last two championship rounds convincingly, though, and got back on track.

- Both teams were beaten in the first round, and from that aspect, both us and Rostov really need these points. I've seen a few of their games and concluded they're a very good team. They got Ajax eliminated this season, and that should be enough of a warning for us. I expect them to keep their lines tight, and we won't have too many chances to try and score. That's why our efficiency could be the key - the Dutch team's coach Phillip Cocu said.

The Dutch are coming to Russia without the two previously injured players, Jurgen Locadia and Luuk Koopmans. The young midfielder Bart Ramselaar got injured in the last league duel, but he's not irreplaceable in his team.
