CSKA Moscow - Tottenham (0:1)

CSKA started well, Tottenham need to make amends

  • Published:

The team from Moscow managed to make a comeback in Leverkusen after falling two goals behind, while Tottenham lost in London to Monaco. They should not allow another defeat even though they won't be able to count on Kane and a few more important players in Moscow

CSKA Moscow had a lucky escape in the first round game in Bayer as they managed to get back from a two-goal deficit (just 15 minutes into the game).

The early lead caused Bayern's players to lose focus which the Russians took advantage of to equalize late in the second half. Bayer kept on dominating later on while Slutsky's team focused on defending. However, Akinfeev didn't concede any more goals.

Following a successful start to Champions League, CSKA struggled to get a win over the feeble Krylya Sovetov. Last week, Slutsky's team were knocked out of the Cup to a lower-league side Yenisey.

He rested almost all of his starters in that game, which turned out to be a bad call. Last Saturday, they failed to beat Krasnodar in the championship even though they played with the top lineup and even though Traore scored just 3 minutes into the game Smolov equalized for Krasnodar soon after and the result has not changed anymore.

Slutsky was not disappointed with the Krasnodar game even though they dropped two points:

- I was really happy with the kind of game we played. It was our best game this season but sadly we couldn't win.

CSKA can definitely be worried about bad form his team has been displaying in the defensive segment of the game. Slutsky knows all about the Tottenham talents since he played a draw with England this summer as the Russian coach.

A lot of the CSKA players participated in that game for Russia while Tottenham's Rose, Walker, Alli, Dier and Kane played the entire game at England.

Slutsky said this about the game with Tottenham:

- I cannot say which position they can threaten us most because they have a lot of players for the finish. They are a big group of good players. We need to be ready to put a fight against them. Tottenham fought for the title last season and they have acquired some new players over the summer. They are one of the best English and world teams.

Midfielder Cauna is out with an injury, which is a problem for Slutsky. The important midfielder Dzagoev is questionable.

CSKA are not expected to make any major changed to the lineup compared to the Bayer game. Slutsky should go with the 4-2-3-1 formation with Traore as the striker.

Tottenham opened Champions League group stage disappointingly by losing to Monaco at Wembley. They seemed to be impressed by the ambiance and the importance of the game. They got two goals behind very early on and couldn't avoid the defeat even though they scored a goal by half time.

That means this CSKA meeting is extremely important for Tottenham. A defeat here would make things very difficult for them in the 4 remaining games.

Good news is, Pochettino's side recorded three straight wins after the defeat to Monaco. Two in English championship and one in League Cup. However, a few players suffered injuries in the meantime, among them Harry Kane.

- We acquired some players this summer. I think we will be competitive even without those who are out with injuries - Pochettino said. Kane, Eris Dier, Mousa Dembele, Danny Rose and Mousa Sissoko are all out with injuries.

The Korean forward Heung-Min Son scored two goals against Middelsbrough and will be Tottenham's biggest hope in Moscow, alongside Janssen. Alli will take the defensive midfielder position.

- It's very obvious that we need to improve our game compared to the Monaco match. We know we are in for a very tough game against a great team. We'll try and win to make up for the points we dropped in the first game - Pochettino said.

Tottenham have never played in Moscow or against CSKA but they did go to Russia five times and have just one defeat and three wins.
