Valencia - Unicaja Malaga (81:77)

Intro to the Eurocup final

  • Published:

Valencia could be more motivated because the first position in the league is at stake here, but we shouldn't write-off relaxed Unicaja

Today we have an intro into the Eurocup final. Championship leaders, Valencia, will face Unicaja in a game that can solidify their top position, and fill them with confidence ahead of the Eurocup final.

Valencia's path toward the final has been great, because they lost a player with each round, and they faced great opponents, and every time the key factor was home court where they are untouchable. The same happened against Hapoel who couldn't threaten them at all.

- This was our best game of the season in all segments. From defense, aggressiveness, rebounds, flow of the ball, pick-and-roll, everything worked perfectly - coach Martinez was thrilled, and he was named the best coach in Eurocup this season. Totally deserved, in our opinion.

Valencia had 6 players in double-digits, and we should point out point guard Vives played, who was questionable due to an injury. He played for only 4 minutes, but the important thing is that the injury is behind him and the playing time will increase.

Diot and Kravtsov are still out, but Valencia will have a replacement for the latter one in Mike Tobey, who will reduce the pressure from Dubljevic and Oriol. That could come to the fore today because Unicaja still cannot count on Musli, which means they will have only Omic on number five, and he could soon get into trouble with fouls against Dubljevic.

- Unicaja are a great team with a lot of players like Nedovic, Smith, Lafayette who make the difference in one-on-one. This game is very important for us and we are not looking at it from Eurocup perspective.

That could meant that  there will be no guarding, which makes sense because Valencia want to stay at the top. Martinez added that Vives and Tobey's playing time will not be significant, but they will be on the roster and will get some playing time.

Unicaja advanced to the Eurocup semi-final easier, so they rested last week and trained for this game. They should be much more rested, but the experience in the previous rounds shows that it's not always an advantage, especially for teams who are used to playing two games per week.

But we should look at today's game as intro, because these two teams will play at the same place in three days, but with much higher stakes - European title. That is why this game is unpleasant and difficult to prepare in both camps.

It will be more difficult for Unicaja without their first center, because it is known how aggressive Valencia are at home, and the depth they would get with Musli would make their job easier. They will now have to rely on Nedovic and Smith, because the rest of the back-court line seems thin when compared to Valencia's aggressive guards. Besides, it's no coincidence that Valencia won the last 5 head-to-heads and they are going into this series of games as favorites.
