Belichick: Nobody gave this to us

  • Published:

The Patriots are one step away from their 7th final in the Belichick-Brady era, and in their way is a team that recorded 9 back-to-back wins

New England Patriots have become the synonym for success in the last 15 years, similar to the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA. After they finished regular season with 14-2 record for the 5th time in club's history, which was enough for them to secure the Number 1 seed position in the AFC for the 6th time. Bill Belichick's team defeated Texans 34-16 and earned their 11th conference final under the legendary coach of Croatian origin.

- This is a game between two best AFC teams. Both deserve to be here. No one gave this to us, nor them. It is always an honor to be a part of the conference final. We respect our opponents, their organization, coach, staff and players. They are a great team that got in the right form at the right time. I hope we will give our best performance on Sunday. That is our goal - said coach Belichick.

His team has not played an ideal game against the Texans, but they still won convincingly, which should concern anyone on their way. Rob Gronkowski's absence was felt against aggressive Texans who intercepted Tom Brady twice, he completed 18 out of 28 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns. These are rather modest stats for a man who made assists for 28 touchdowns in regular season and was intercepted only twice, and tonight he will face defense that did not allow over 265 passing yards in the last 9 games.

- The whole team will have to be at a high level against them. The priority is minimizing Brady's role. We have to put pressure on him. The Texans did a great job there. Everyone know the game plan to apply against them, but it is hard to apply. It takes a lot of discipline. We will have our hands full - said the away team's safety, Mike Mitchell.

Despite a relatively difficult match-up, it is hard not to have confidence in Brady considering his experience in big games and success in the last 15 years. Even though Brady missed the first four games, the Patriots were at the top of the league in the regular season in most of offensive statistic categories, including yards won (386.3) and points scored (27.8). Also, the team from Boston concede only 15.6 points per game, the least in the league, and they forced their opponents to 23 turnovers.

In the last 4 seasons, the Patriots' record at their Gillette Stadium is 35-5, but coach Belichick does not think home field is a special advantage:

- Ask the Cowboys and the Chiefs how important home field is. The games are won by the players on the field, and they will decide the winners on Sunday.

The Patriots have been undefeated in the last 8 games, and the Pittsburgh Steelers 9. Last weekend they qualified for the conference final for the 5th time in the last 13 year, even though they did not score a touchdown. All they needed for the win at Kansas City were 6 field goals, which will not be the case tonight.

- We are one win away from the Superbowl. We are going to the dragon's nest and we will try to slay the dragon - said quarterback Ben Roethlisberger who recorded 13 wins in the playoff.

The Steelers started playing well the moment they decided to give crazy amount of balls to LeVeon Bell, whose average in the last 8 appearances is 146.5 rushing yards. In the first round of play-off, he broke the club's record with 167 yards won in ground game, and he improved it last Sunday in KC where he recorded 170 rushing yards in their 18-16 win. In two play-off games he recorded 59 rushes, and he scored 2 touchdowns, so it is clear who the Patriots' defense have to focus on.

The team from Boston won't have an easy job tonight like they did in the 7th week of the season, when they won at Pittsburgh 27-16. Landry Jones was leading the Steelers' offense then, and his qualities were nowhere near as impressive as Big Ben's, and despite having a limited quarterback, Bell managed to record 149 yards. He did need 31 touch with the ball to do it. The Patriots had one safety high and got one additional defense man in the box whenever they suspected they would go for a rush, which they will not be doing as often now that the Steelers' offense is lead by Roethlisberger, who took his team all the way twice. Brady managed to do that 4 times, and if he wins another ring, he will be even with legendary Bart Starr at the top of the All-time standings. Brady's career record against the Steelers is 9-2, and in these games he made passes for 26 touchdown, and was intercepted only 3 times.

- Us two seniors have been playing this game a long time. He deserves all the praise he is getting. I think the game is much bigger than the two of us. We are not playing tennis. I am used to the stories of quarterback duels. I am sure he knows this game is bigger than two of us - said Roethlisberger.
