Spain and Canada are to open this tournament hosted by Spain. The hosts had no problems in EC qualifiers last season. They are one of the top teams in the world. Last year, they made it into the Olympics final, two years ago at Eurobasket they took bronze. Coach Mondelo has ten or so players who are on the team again. All of them are either WNBA players or play at top European teams. This summer they will be even stronger because Lytte is back. There is a total of 11 players who were at Rio Olympics last season. In two test games, Spain were dominant, especially in defense. Canada have a very young team, without all the key players from the Rio Olympics and FIBA Americas of two years ago. They won the gold there (the US didn't participate). Lisa Thomidis said their goal here is to win 5 games, to focus on team development and see where they are.
Only three players were at Rio and FIBA Americas - Langlois and Plouffe sisters. Langlois had good stats and she is the only one who deserves to be on the national teams. The rest are mostly young players who play in Europe or US and Canada universities. Some are still in high school. This is the first test game for them this year. Their first opponents are mighty Spain. Last year, they lost to Spain in Rio by 13 with the top team. Before Rio, they lost to Spain by 15 and 23, also with a top team.
