Jack Sock - Alejandro Gonzalez (6:2 6:4)

Both players in good form at the moment

  • Published:

Sock played in the semifinal at Newport, while Gonzalez managed to get to the quarterfinal at Bogota. The American is still a favorite, but the Colombian should not be disregarded

After a long period, Jack Sock managed to eclipse even Isner, a player who has been the main man in the USA for a few seasons now. US men's tennis is in a crisis, as they often say themselves, so a Grand Slam title, even in doubles, had a positive impact. Sock managed to get the title almost by accident, as he's been looking for a partner practically since the tournament started. He found one in Pospisil, who had little confidence in his abilities at the moment due to a back injury.

However, everything seems to have clicked, and they went through big tennis names in the doubles world, and they will surely remember this Wimbledon adventure. Sock did not have much time to celebrate afterwards, as he booked an appearance at Newport.

There he demonstrated the quality of his current form in the best possible way, beating three compatriots to get to his first semifinal in what has been a great season so far. The one to single out would certainly be the quarterfinal victory over Isner, while the eager Hewitt in the quarterfinal was still too much to overcome.

We should also point out that this success completes a set of ATP quarterfinals for Sock on all four surfaces, proving his versatility. He probably has fond memories of this tournament, as he got to the quarterfinal in 2012. However, last year he dropped out in the first round.

- The tennis center is almost ideally positioned, and this is in my opinion one of the prettier editions. I hope I play some good tennis.

The first challenge will be Alejandro Gonzalez, a Colombian with great performances to his name this year. He is currently playing his best tennis ever, and has achieved some personal bests.

He initially proved himself great in challengers, which gained him the Top 100 status, leading to ATP later. He did not find his bearings right away (seven consecutive defeats), but still hit a positive series after he scored his first victory, and the series is now at seven, with two quarterfinals at that level.

The favorite one is certainly the one at Bogota, a home tournament played last week. There he justified his sixth seed placing by beating two weaker ranked players, de Bakker and Donskov. He then put up solid resistance to Stepanek, but experience and higher quality still brought Czech the semifinal.

-I'm leaving the tournament with a feeling I could have done more. It's a pity, but he did play some key points better.  The show goes on, new goals every week, the next is Atlanta- said the Colombian after a close defeat.

We should note he met Sock once before, in a challenger that was also played on concrete. The American won in three sets, and one should not be surprised to see one more close match, given the form of each of the players.

Although Sock is undoubtedly the favorite in this match, I don't see this as a walk in the park for the American. Despite getting to the semifinal of Newport, he did not perform so memorably, and one must admit he was largely fueled by confidence gained at Wimbledon. Now he is returning to concrete after a long time, and I expect he will need some time to adapt, a segment where Gonzalez has an advantage. He played in the quarterfinal in Bogota, and is at the height of confidence. He also won their only previous clash (concrete), where we saw them play three sets, and I expect him to put up decent resistance.
