John Isner - Steve Johnson (7:6 3:6 6:7)

Isner: This is my favorite part of the season

  • Published:

Johnson lost two extended sets last week but he won this time. He had an average of 2 aces per serve game. Isner conquered Atlanta last week and he's defending the finals here. It's well-known that he gets his best results at home

We've often said that Isner does the best at home. The stats are more than convincing but someone has decided to make an addendum. The tall American has won 9 ATP titles, 2 of which came from New Zealand, but all came from English-speaking countries. Even though he got stuck in the quarterfinals in Newport, he got back at Sock for the defeat in Atlanta and and he defended his title. This time, he didn't face Anderson on the other side, but Sela who climbs a chair to huge the two-meter players. Isner won by a convincing margin.

- I felt great since the moment I stepped onto the pitch and getting the early lead helped me out a lot. I love it when it's hot and the balls simply fly away and these are my conditions - said the top American player and added:

- This is my favorite part of the season. I have started off well again and I'm looking forward to Washington. I have always played well on this tournament.

Johnson is a typical American player, which means he'll focus on his serve and forehand. He won't score as many aces as Isner, but he's efficient. After all, he's had 12 ATP wins and a good score at the challenger level (26-6). He lacks better results from major tournaments but he expects a lot from the American summer. Last week, he was unlucky with the draw as he faced Querrey early on and lost after two extended sets. This time, he won after two sets.

For the past few months, Duckworth has shown that he's a Top 100 potential. He took a set against Berdych, he beat Sela, who's having the best season of his career, and he won a challenger in Lexington last week. Johnson opened the match better. He was a threat on the return in the fourth game but he got a break in the sixth and this allowed him to take the lead in the sets. The Australian became a threat in the second set, Johnson saved four break chances for 2-2 and then a set point at 4-5. He got into the tie-break and secured the win by getting a mini-break at 3-2. He ended up with 23 aces in 10 service games and all 5 break chances saved.

Even though they've never played against each other, Isner and Johnson know each other well. Just like Isner said, this is his most successful tournament. Last year, he reached the finals where Del Potro won, and his overall score here is 19-6. Johnson can hold onto his serve and could be a tricky obstacle for Isner, who often plays the worst in the first few rounds.

Isner conquered Atlanta last year and last week and he's defending the finals here. Of course he got the wins in his manner. He played 4 matches en route to the final last year and all 4 went over the margin, while the first set regularly went into tie-break. I often mention that Isner is the most vulnerable at the start of the tournament. That's how Ginepri almost beat him last week and reached the third set, and I don't see why Johnson couldn't do the same. He played two extended sets against Querrey last week, and he had over 2 aces per service games here .I expect fast games and that suits bets like this. A good option is +1.5 games in first set on Johnson.
