Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - Andy Murray (5:7 5:7 4:6)

Before Toronto, Murray had beaten Tsonga eight time in a row

  • Published:

The Frenchman got another convincing win but it was against another clay player. Murray's match against Kuznetsov wasn't a walk in the park but he started playing more aggressively. He believes he has what it takes to bring Tsonga down, as shown in the head-to-head score. He lost in Toronto, but he had a one-break advantage in the third set

Even though we saw how much room for progress Carreno Busta has, he couldn't make up for the lack of power. Tsonga's first serve generally went 25 kmh faster than his, not to mention the strokes. Even though Carreno-Busta was successful on the defense from time to time, he just couldn't threaten the Frenchman's serve. Tsonga saved all six break chances and got a break in every set. One would say a routine win, which is a confirmation of the positive effect that the Toronto title had on the best French player.

Tsonga ended up with a double-digit number of aces (14), good first serve efficiency (81%) and a positive ratio of winners and unforced errors. In three matches that he's played here, he lost only one set but he had a favorable draw. He played against a clay court specialist every time, and the last two had now experience on hard court. But, a win's a win.

- I'm happy with my performance. Most importantly, I got through and now the real challenges will begin - said Tsonga briefly and then focused on the next opponent:

- Murray know each other very well but my score against him isn't exactly the best. Regardless of that, I'm optimistic ahead of this match. I beat him in Toronto and it's good for my confidence, which means I can play against him. It's important to keep playing like I played so far and I know I'll have a chance.

Unlike the Frenchman who is winning convincingly, Murray is still far from his ideal form. The cramps from the first round have been forgotten and Bachinger was beaten with very little trouble, but Kuznetsov was definitely a challenge. The second set went into the tie-break and the Russian won the third. It was only at the end that Murray managed to beat the Russian, who has a much weaker ranking. Who would have thought that the match would be so complicated after Murray won the first set by 6-1.

The good news for the Scotsman is his progress. He was aggressive right from the start and that can help him regain his confidence. He scored 47 winners and won every point on the net (29/33). Regardless of the occasional fluctuations, he has every reason to be pleased:

- I had a good start of the match, which definitely helped. Kuznetsov improved the level of his performance by the end of the second period and in the third set. After that, I tried to play a hard and stable match and it paid off in the end. It wasn't an easy day to play. Lots of humidity and the balls were heavy. In any case, I played much better than in the first round.

Now he's facing Tsonga. Up until Toronto, the Scotsman had complete domination in head-to-heads as he had won 8 matches in a row, and the Frenchman only had 1 win from an exhibition in the Emirates. Everything changed in Toronto. Murray missed out on one-break advantage in the third set and Tsonga turned things around to win the title with four Top 10 wins and now he's full of confidence once again. Up until Toronto, he seemed like a sitting duck.

- We had a lot of tight matches but I mostly won them. I think my game goes well against his but he's at a very high level now. I'm aware I have a difficult match ahead of me - said Murray about his opponent for today and concluded that he has what it takes to beat him, regardless of their last match.
