Brkić with the best ranking of his career

Tomislav has moved up by almost 300 places since the start of the year. In last two and a half months, he has 3 futures titles and a quarterfinal from Izmir. Smirnov has 4 consecutive defeats at this level

It was only this July that Tomislav Brkić started playing at the challenger level. Before that, he had been a futures player and he has left a pretty good impression so far. He passed the qualifications at San Benedetto, beat Samper Montana and put up a solid resistance against Martin, who had one of rare good tournaments.

He later had some attempts at the ATP level but and to get back to the futures. But that is when his form improved. Since early August to start of September, he won 3 consecutive futures titles. He beat some renowned names like Teixeira, Donati, Granollers, Munoz-De la Nava...

It is a real shame that he decided to switch from clay, where he had a good rhythm, to a hard court tournament last week. Despite of that, he did a proper job there. He beat two players that he could and then lost against Ilhan. Now he is getting back to clay and if playing his first tournament with a new ranking. He is just a step away from Top 200, which he and his coach have been aiming for:

- I think Tomislav is Top 100 material and my goal is to take him into this company. But it would be great if we could get into Top 200 by the end of this year - said his coach.

Apart from holding the best ranking of his career and moving up by almost 300 places, Tomislav getting his two consecutive wins in Izmir was the third time in his career. A few more times and hes in Top 200. Even though he didn`t play at the challenger level too much this season, he left a good impression in those that he did, and that is the most important thing.

Artem Smirnov had a great run at the futures level at the start of the season. He had a 33-1 score at one point, but as we said, it was at the futures and mostly fast-paced courts. When he focused on clay challengers, his results plummeted.

He has played 14 challenger tournaments in the main draw and he has a 4-10 score. Even though he often got a tough opponent, one gets the impression the Ukrainian could have done more. He had defeats against Dzumhur, Albot, Riba, Ronzalez, Rola even Fucsovics last week in Trnava. However, he understands the difference between futures and challengers. He has a problem imposing his game at this level and it is understandable.

Like we said, he played against Fucsovics last week. He passed the qualifications in Trnava but bot his fourth consecutive challenger defeat. If nothing else, Brkić seems to be in a better rhythm of matches. He has 3 futures titles and the quarter-final from Izmir. Even though this is an open match, Tomislav is in better form.
