Alexander Zverev - Grigor Dimitrov (6:2 4:6 2:6)

Dimitrov: My chances for London are small, but I'm not giving up

  • Published:

The Bulgarian is aware that he lost the key points in the Stockholm finale, but Basel and Paris can change a lot of things. Zverev got an invitation and this is his last tournament of the season

This week the Series 500 tournaments are being played with basically all of them are going on right now. Last week the Series 250 tournaments were in place, but the finales were impressive. On one side we had Ferrer against Murray in Vienna, and on the other it was Berdych against Dimitrov in Stockholm. All of them are motivated because they are chasing London in a race which is still going on. Between all of them Dimitrov seems the weakest. He's on 11th place, but there's still a chance. We probably won't be seeing Nadal in London, and he's only 200 points away from Ferrer on 9th.

- I know that, after being beaten in the final, my chances are small, but you never know. Next week the Series 1000 tournament is on and that could change everything. Three spots are still available and I want to jump into one of them - the Bulgarian tennis player was clear in his ambitions for the end of the season.

The Bulgarian failed in Shanghai when he lost to Bennetau. He lost the most points in that match, while last week he came to the finals. He feels good in Stockholm because he had been training at the academy for some time. He won the first set against Berdych, but then lost the other two. The Czech was simply better. He opened the last two sets with a break and kept the advantage:

- It was a good match and Berdych earned the title. He was better and that's it.

Zverev is racing against Coric. We're talking about 17-year-olds who stepped out the most in the young generation. Both of them are nearing the Top 100 and the Croat is somewhat better for now, but the German just scored bigger. We're talking about Hamburg, the ATP tournament at which he, surprisingly, reached the semi-finals. It was clear back then that we're talking about a very special tennis player.

The German can't find his game indoors as well as on clay, though. He crashed out of the first round at two challengers, while in Mons he tied three wins together with three tie-breaks in five sets. Last week he missed by this much to earn the main draw in Vienna. Brands was better than him in three sets, and he's been playing his best tennis for years on that same tournament.

- I know I'm one of the best players of my generation and that gives me self-confidence. I'm aware that I have to work a lot, but I also know that I have big possibilities to move forward. There are no weak opponents on this level and because of that each match is difficult in its own way - Zverev recently said, and he got invited to this tournament:

- It was fun to play pairs with Thiem in Vienna, but now it's time for Basel, my last tournament of the season.

Although the German's talent is not questionable, Dimitrov is the favorite here. His game really stands out in these conditions, and the motive is more than clear. Zverev is playing his last tournament of the season which means he's not interested in challengers. That might sound unusual because, theoretically speaking, he does have a chance to earn the entry into the Top 100. Apparently he's in no rush, he is only 17 after all.
