Kevin Anderson - Rafael Nadal (5:7 1:6 4:6)

Nadal: He's a great player who could be tricky for me

  • Published:

After a disappointing performance against Smyczek that left him with a lot of question marks, Nadal went past the well-experienced Sela easily.

Despite starting the season with a great failure against Berrer in Doha, Nadal manged to clinch the doubles title at that tournament. Late last season, he announced a great comeback after not doing well since mid-last year, but the comeback is ripe with struggle at the moment. Nadal is often left with no explanation for the problems, constantly pointing out that he's ready.

Ahead of Australian Open, he said that he doesn't see himself as one of the favorites and that his goals at the moment are different. He met Youzhni, who is just a shadow of his former self and clearly has even more problems than the Spaniard, and beat him easily to advance to the next round. It seemed things are looking up for Nadal, but the next match proved the problems were still present.

His next opponent qualifier Smyczek brought Nadal on the verge of defeat. Nadal managed to win only on account of fierceness and the lack of experience at the opponent. After the match, Nadal said he had cramps in the second set and that he didn't know how much he can go on.

He managed to bring the match to its end and advanced to the third round where he took on the well-experienced Israeli Sela. It seemed to be a perfect match for the wounded Nadal since Sela doesn't have any special shots. Nadal was more direct and served and attacked better. he reason for that were Sela's weaker shots, which turned the match into a one-sided win for Nadal.

- I think I played much better than the other day and I felt better too. Forehand and serving was good and I could have been more relaxed - Nadal said and added that he will do another preparation period after AO.

He's still has work to do in Australia and despite recording a very convincing win, Nadal is still far from his top performances. Progress is visible and good things is, he doesn't have any new heath struggles, but that doesn't means those he had before disappeared.

The next challenge he will be faced with will answer many question. We could say this is his first tough task in Melbourne. He will take on Anderson, who certainly has a choice of weapons, which Nadal knows full well:

- He's a great player. He can get tricky and dangerous for me and I need to rest as much as possible and then prepare for the match - Nadal said.

Anderson has never gotten past round 4 at any of the Grand Slams. According to his coach, his goal this season is precisely to make progress in that respect to get closer to Top 10. The year didn't start off in the best manner but he clearly is making progress each next match.

That goes for his second round meeting with Berankis here and the third round meeting with Gasquet. A win over the Frenchman was by far his greatest win of this season and a confirmation that he likes AO.

- It's one of the favorite tournaments for me. I've reached round 4 last year and hope I can take the next step this season. I expect the top players to be less dominant - Anderson said even before the start of AO and seemed to predicted most of it well.

Back to the Gasquet meeting which Anderson did very well in the tactical aspect. He used his strong suits and aggressive game in the best possible manner and we need to point out that he won all the key point in the match. He saved 5 out of 6 break points and converted both of his to win in the end. He also fired 52 winner and recorded 29 unforced errors. He had 69% of first serves after which he won 84% of points and firing 18 aces.

This suggests that the South African is bursting with confidence that will be very helpful in the next match. He believes in his game, as it would seem, and that could make him a threat for Nadal. Anderson has a clear game plan, good shots, and could have a chance of reaching his first even Grand Slam QFs despite taking on a mighty oppoennt.
