Kei Nishikori - Mikhail Youzhny (6:2 6:1)

Regardless of his win, the Russian is still not very convincing

  • Published:

Nishikori made his first blunder this season at the Indian Wells, but Lopez is almost in the Top 10. Youzhny played weakly, but beat his regular customer. It's only his third win this season, so he'll need to play much better against Nishikori than he did for some time now

Nishikori has been having a flawless season up until Indian Wells. He only got one title, but was only losing to the best players. He even got two singles wins in the Davis Cup in Canada, which was a tricky feat. He connected two wins at the Indian Wells, too, and then faced the uncomfortable Lopez who showed once again why he's at the edge of getting into the Top 10 even in his veteran years. The left-handed Spaniard won in straight sets, even though he could have lost both. He played cleverly, and outplayed the Japanese, Nishikori said so himself after the defeat:

- I think I really had one bad game at 5-4 in the first set. I think until then, I was playing better. I mean, he was hitting good serves, but you know, I had all the chances. But just one bad game at 5-4, I think that's all that matters in today's match.

The fact is that Nishikori's still not playing as well as he did last year. The results don't show it yet. Lopez is his first big mistake, and the Spaniard is the 12th player of the world. He supposedly had some problems with his wrist, but the Japanese always has some problems. That's not why he got defeated. Now, he'll play Miami, where he feels at home. He's been practicing at the academy a few hours drive away from these courts for years:

- I really like this tournament. Hopefully I can play good tennis this week and next. I did really well last year, and I have been playing good tennis. These are tough conditions, really hot. I've been practicing these two days. It's really important to stay healthy here.

Youzhny got his third win this season, but that didn't help fix the impression. He still seems like a man without a clear vision in his game. He hasn't been inspired for a long time, he didn't show aggressiveness in his backhands, but even that was enough to beat Golubev, who actually ruined himself. The number of soft balls he sent to out or into the net is incredible. His insatiable thirst for the winners cost him another defeat.

It was a weak match, obvious even from the numbers. 80 unforced errors in three sets. Youzhny took control after losing a set. He could have gotten the win more easily, he was leading 3-0 in the third set, but his ex compatriot gave him enough gifts. That was Youzhny's sixth win in seven duels.

He'll face a much more difficult opponent now. Judging by the other duels against the Top 10 players this season, probably too difficult. The Russian lost to Hanescu convincingly two weeks ago. He couldn't take more than three games per set from Nadal and Federer, and the Japanese is in that top league now. One thing is for sure. If Youzhny wants to win this match, he'll have to play his best game this season.

I've always liked Youzhny's tennis, but this season, it's just not good. Even though supposedly he can't fully heal an injury, his body language shows there are much bigger problems when he's playing. He's not energetic, or aggressive. His single-handed backhand isn't there, and he's standing behind the baseline too much. The only time he connected wins this year was in Zagreb. He was losing 4-2 to Kavčić in the third set then, and the Slovenian had another foot surgery afterwards. Youzhny defeated Hanescu at the Indian Wells, with only one tie-breaker. He defeated Golubev here, but the Khazak could make any coach feel super depressed. Even though he won the first set, he kept trying to hit winners, and sent short balls to the bottom of the net. Probably because of the ratio against Youzhny, which is now 6-1 in Youzhny's favor. But, what's more important in all that is that there was nothing new to see from Youzhny. He's still passive, and he won't be able to feast on Nishikori's mistakes. Kei is in the top now, and Youzhny looked powerless against Federer and Nadal this season. As for Nishikori, his only mistake was against Lopez, but the Spaniard is almost in the Top 10 again. Also, his left-handed serve is excellent, and can give a hard time to any player any day. Youzhny is only a shadow of a player he used to be. He's out of top 60, he says he doesn't plan on playing the challengers, and a lot of things point to him announcing his retirement by the end of the year. He can't match the best players anymore, and Nishikori is going to prove that. The fact that Kei was eliminated from the Indian Wells could actually be good for this bet. He's practicing at an academy close to Miami, and he's ready for these conditions.
