David Goffin - Jerzy Janowicz (6:4 6:3)

Janowicz won despite finishing with 11 points less than Bautista

  • Published:

Goffin left Coric without a single game in the first set and without a single break point in the whole match. It seems like everything's alright with his rib. Janowicz won 11 points less, fired only two aces, had worse serving, converted only 3 out of 13 break point opportunities and still managed to beat the 15th player on ATP list

Bautista retired from his doubles match one day before the match with Janowicz after being hit in the eye with a ball. It was clearly not a big problem even though both opponents opened their singles match as if they had problems with their eyes. There were 12 break points in the first 5 games and Janowicz managed to do better in that rhythmless game. He took a 3-2 lead and managed to stay ahead until the end of the set. His Spanish opponent opened the second set fiercely to win 5 straight games and finish it in 22 minutes. He was the better player in the decider but Janowicz managed to break him mentally. The Spaniard missed out on two straight game-point for 5-5 and allowed Janowicz to win his first match point.

Janowicz would often lose close matches. He sometimes did brilliantly sometimes horribly, while trying to pull off the craziest moves in the most important points this season. The match with Bautista was nothing like that. Janowicz won 11 points less than the opponent, fired only 2 aces, his serving was worse than opponents as well, he converted only 3 out of his 13 break-points and still managed to beat the 15th player in the ATP list. He won through mental strength, which doesn't happen very often for him, especially not on this level.

Goffin didn't play one of the top players, but the young Coric of Croatia is said to have a very bright future ahead. Fierceness, and possible confidence are the strong suit for the young Croat at the moment but his fierce spirit suffered a blow in the Maurer match. He was forced to ask for medical assistance, couldn't get up, and was a break down in the third set. Maurer was not capable of taking advantage of any of those things. Goffin opened the match with Coric brilliantly just like Maurer, but unlike the Austrian, managed to finish in the same manner. Coric didn't stand a chance and Goffin ended up recording him first ATP win in over a month, Davis Cup not included. He pulled out of Indian Wells before the start with a minor injury he had from the Davis Cup weekend but that was only a precaution as he wanted to be completely fit and ready for Miami.

The match started with a very long game, which turned out to be the longest one in the entire match. Goffin needed 4 break points to finally break Coric's resistance and after that won the next 5 games to finish the first set in only 26 minutes. Coric saved a break point at the start of set 2 but was soon after down again. Goffin could have won even more easily had he not missed 3 straight break points in the 5th game. But has no regrets as he finished without allowing Coric a single break-point opportunity, while losing only one first service point (10 service points in total).

Goffin injured his rib in Marseille, which forced him to retire from it. He didn't play as much as planned during the Davis Cup weekend and went on to pull out of Indian Wells. He beat Janowicz before retiring quite convincingly despite allegedly already having been in pain. Maybe that's why that win meant so much to him:

- You can say it was like Davis vs Goliath, why not. He is very tall, with a strong serve but I made him move a lot and I played smart. I didn't allow him to control the game through his first serve, which he likes to do.

Goffin seems to know Janowicz very well. He had a reason to remember him as the Pole brought an end to his great winning streak last season. He has 25 straight wins before that Winston Salem QFs defeat.
