Grigor Dimitrov - Vasek Pospisil (6:2 6:2)

Even though he doesn't want to admit it, Dimitrov is struggling with confidence

  • Published:

Pospisil beat Del Potro in straight sets but the Argentine could have won two sets with basically useless backhand. Dimitrov had a few inexplicable defeats after Australian Open and then recorded two double faults when serving to stay in the set at Indian Wells

Pospisol took advantage of what was offered to him. That is the shortest description of his match with Del Potro. The Argentine didn't play since Sydney and had a long break before that. He had two wrist surgeries, which affected his style. He failed mentally, even though he was very careful at backhand.

The Canadian beat Del Potro in straight sets but could have just as easily lost in straight sets. He was 00-40 down in the fifth game and then saved another two break points at 4-4 to go on and convert his break point opportunity when Del Potro served to stay in the match. Del Potro should have at least won the second set following an early break he kept until the game in which he served for the set. He had 6-4 in tie-break and basically gave Pospisil the match on a silver platter when he had a double fault. Pospisil sent the shots on Del Potro's backhand side for the most part of the match and that is how he won the last point as well.

- I didn't know what to expect but I soon realized that his backhands aren't as strong as usually. I took advantage of it to put pressure on him. He served great and I just got a bit more lucky than him in the end - Pospisil said. His opponent had only 8 winners and clearly isn't at his best. Pospisil is now facing a Top 10 opponent:

- Dimitrov is very talented, we all know that. Be that as it may, I'll be playing my game and we'll see.

Dimitrov got very close to crying again, this time at Australian Open. He clearly has motivation but maybe he's currently putting too much pressure on himself at the moment. He got into the Top 10 shortly, started winning tournaments but to win the greatest titles, he need to beat someone from the Big 4. Even if that works out, the rest of the competition is getting fiercer too, as Dimitrov's defeats to Robredo, Muller, and Harrison proved.

- I need more matches, I haven't' found rhythm yet. I have no problems with confidence. I feel better than before because I have experience now. I need to work on my game and the results will follow - Dimitrov said calmly after sounding pretty frustrated a few weeks ago.

Even though he says confidence is not an issue, that certainly wasn't the case in his match with Robredo. He had twice as many winners as the Spaniard but that didn't help since he also had around 40 unforced errors. When the match was being settled in the third set, Dimitrov had two double faults when serving for the match and clearly not because he was afraid of Robredo's return. Confidence seems to be the problem after all.

Pospisil lost both matches head-to-head matches to Dimitrov. The Bulgarian was experiencing some problems in Basel first round last year, he seemed tired and injured but beat Pospisil easily regardless, mostly because Pospisil had too many unforced errors. His aggressive game sometimes only seems to be forced and ineffective.
