Jeremy Chardy - Milos Raonic (1:6 7:5 6:7)

Chardy knows everything about Raonic but still hasn't managed to beat him

  • Published:

The Frenchman was down 4-0 against Melzer to go on and allow the Frenchman only one more game till the end. He is not set to meet Raonic. These two often practice together and Chardy knows what to do in theory, but he is too restless to stay focused throughout the match

Verdasco recorded to win his second win over Nadal yesterday, while Raonic recorded his first one at Indian Wells. Nadal was clearly not at his best, but that doesn't make the win any less important for Raonic. If he wants to make progress, he needs to break the mental barrier that separates him from the Big 4. Only wins can get his there and his coach Ljubicic knows that, which is why he thinks that win over Nadal could be a turning point.

Raonic beat Gabashvilli here easily in the first match in what was one of his most convincing wins of the season. He was a bit wary about the start but opened the first match with 5 straight games and went on to convert a break point opportunity very early in the second set. It seemed like there were no problems, which is why it's kind of strange that he was worried:

- I expected the worse since I didn't have a lot of time for practice in Miami while my opponent already played one match. I did well at Indian Wells but conditions here are something entirely different. You have to start each ween from scratch. I did my job, I'm happy with my game and my approach.

Chardy had three QFs in the first two months of seasons 2014 but things aren't going that well this season. He tied wins only once in 8 tournaments and that will probably not change as he meets Raonic today. Following a few first round exists, he tried to change the atmosphere by doing the Irving challenger before Miami. he won only one match here, despite being the No. 1 seed. He failed short of expectations in the Darcis match, mostly because he reacted poorly to Belgian's backhand drop shots. But, Cahrdy went to do well here against the very tricky veteran Melzer.

Things weren't looking up as Melzer won first 4 games in the match. But Chardy imporved and won the next 9 games to get the first set and then took a 3-0 lead in the second one. Melzer managed to win a single game after his 4-0 lead. He struggled with an injury and was simply making too many mistakes as he himself admitted afterward. Chardy was, on the other hand, as happy as you would expect him to be.

- I started playing well and I just couldn't miss. That was the feeling I had in those moments. That turning point I had probably broke down Melzer. I saw he doesn't have confidence, which is why the win turned out so convincing - Chardy said. He is now set to meet an opponent against whom losing a service game mostly means losing the set:

- I get along well with Raonic and we often practice together. There are no secrets, he has great serve and you really need to be focused against him because losing your service game means a lot more than against other players. You need to be patient and wait for your chances, because there won't be many of those.

Chardy knows everything and says that there will be no surprises in this match. He lost all 5 head-to-head matches with Raonic, though. Not even the three sets he won could help. Just like Raonic needs to break the mental barrier against the top players, Chardy needs to restrain his restless hand when firing forehands because only a few unforced errors could result in his losing the service game, which would, in turn, end with Raonic wining the set. Chardy knows that very well, it's only questionable whether he can do well since start to finish. In those previous 5 head-to-head matches and 13 sets, only two finished in tie-breaks - the ones in the first match.
