Juan Monaco - Alejandro Gonzalez (7:5 6:1)

Gonzalez failed at challengers

  • Published:

The Argentinian has been playing very well since Buenos Aires. Warwinka crushed him last week with strength, but he's a great favorite against Gonzalez for a reason. The Colombian disappointed us on the last three tournaments, and he's out of Top 100

Last year Monaco managed to tie wins for the first time in the season only in Dusseldorf. Before that he ignored the gossip about ending his career. The crisis was there, but media often want drama. The fact is that the Argentinian helped a bit by blaming the injuries for hFis state, and not admitting the lack of self-confidence. But, that didn't ruin him. A year later Monaco is again among Top 40, and on his way to again become a seed on Grand Slams.

- Last year I had a lot of problems with injuries, but in the end I started playing better. This year results finally arrived. The Buenos Aires finals helped me a lot because I've proven to myself that I can reach tournament finals. Now I'm on the right track again - Monaco was pleased with his rise on the ATP level.

Since Rio the Argentinian never got knocked out of the first round, and in Miami he again tied four wins. Last week Warwinka stopped him. Although the Swiss is going through a crisis now, he had too much strength for Monaco who remained at five winners. Not even the 4-2 lead in the second set didn't help because Warwinka won four games in a row for a win.

Gonzalez was talking about heading for the Top 50 last year, and how his whole family were dedicated to his career. It all looked amazing, but he didn't prove to be an ATP level. In order to save his Top 100 status he had to return to challenger, but he didn't reach the finals on that level either. Twice this season he got knocked out in the first two rounds, just like last week in Sarasota. Olivo won more than half of the points on his serve and five times did a break for a convincing win.

In the Colombian's case, the numbers are clear this season. Thrice he earned the second round of ATP tournaments and not once did he do a step more. The win of the season is the one from Melbourne against Fognini, but the Italian wanted to lose. Because of everything written here, Gonzalez's chances are small today.
