Andrey Rublev - Fernando Verdasco (7:6 6:3)

Rubev: There's no difference between the best juniors and those outside of Top 100

  • Published:

Last year the young Russian was the best junior of the world, and he already won on the Series 1000 tournament. In the qualifications he turned both sets against Gombos. Verdasco has been playing well lately, although he still has psychological errors, very characteristic for him

Not a lot of people heard of the Spaniard Munar, last year's finalist of the junior Roland Garros. But, they've won the winner of that tournament very well. Rublev was declared the best junior of 2014. Although that information deserves respect, the Russian is not considered a junior anymore. He already proved himself of the ATP level, and it seems he could head in the same way as Kyrgios and Coric.

- If you ask me, there's no difference between the best juniors and those outside of the Top 100. I felt that on Tour. Those in the Top 100 are special, but only because they play complete tennis and are strong in their mind. Those are things you can't win with a couple of tournaments, you have to build that - Rublev is very mature, but he substituted his self-confidence with haughtiness:

- Everyone keep asking me about the ranking, about my goals. I'm only 17 years old and I don't need to think about that. It's my duty to wake up every morning full of enthusiasm and the wish to learn. I have to keep giving my best on practices, and the rest will come. In the meantime I have such chances to show how much I've learned, how much I've progressed.

The young Russian got a wildcard, but for qualifications. He earned the main draw. Huta Galung retired when he was already at point of no return and heading into certain defeat. Against Gombos he's already proven his quality a couple of times this season. He turned both sets. The Hungarian had 5-3 in the first stage and 3-1 in the second, and he lost both. That's a mental strength not typical for young players such as himself. It's usually the other way around.

Verdasco is fighting for the status of the seed on Grand Slams, and he needs that because he's prone to failing, so an easier roster can only help him out. He defended the title in Houston, a privilege he didn't feel only once in the past four years. For the first time this season he tied three wins. Before that he beat the weak nadal in Miami. Despite the fact that Nadal played poorly, winning still counts because Verdasco usually missed even better chances. When you put two and two together, Nando is ina solid phase, despite the Monte Carlo episode.

Last week the left-handed Spaniard reminded us of his typical edition. Being defeated by Dimitrov is nothing shameful, but it's incredible how the score can affect his game. In the third set the Bulgarian had 4-1 with a double break. Verdasco almost came back. One break came, and the second one could have too because he had seven break-points in a game where Diitrov was serving for a win. He missed all of that and then fell on the first match-point. Of course, the Bulgarian's game was key, but the Spaniard helped a bit with 44 unforced errors.

One season Nadal wasn't at this tournament and Verdasco used that. Five years ago he won Barcelona, but now he's far from the favorites. Still, he should at least reach the second round. Although the Russian impressed us a couple of times, Gombos should have taken at least a set. Young Rublev is up for a challenge against Verdasco, and it will be interesting to see how will he react in a match in which he has nothing to lose.
