Joao Sousa - Thomaz Bellucci (6:7 4:6)

Bellucci after a hat-trick in Switzerland

  • Published:

Sousa saved 4 consecutive match-points in quarterfinals and barely managed to win his semifinals match. His fierceness once again pulled his through. Bellucci, on the other hand, lost only 5 service points against Giraldo. That was his top game. Out of three ATP title he has, two are from Switzerland

Giraldo didn't allow Cilic a single break-point only to go on and meet Bellucci, who did the same to him. It was a one-side win for the Brazilian who now has a chance to win his third ATP title in this country. The first two are from Gstaad. Belucci was probably very happy to learn about a new ATP tournament in Switzerland, even if it's taking place only one week before Roland Garros.

- It seems like Switzerland is my favorite place. I don't know why but I'm always so relaxed here. It's not too hot and the conditions suit me. The ball bounces very high, which is good for my serve - Bellucci said, trying to explain what is it about this country that makes him to successful here.

Bellucci lost the set in a somewhat clumsy manner in the quarterfinal match. He was dominant for the most part of the match but couldn't win more than a game in that set. That happened because he was nervous. But Bellucci sailed through the next match, having lost only 5 service points. He converted the first break point in the fifth game and then won the set by converting another on later on. Both opponents did well in their respective service games in the second set up until the moment when Giraldo served to stay in the match. He had a 30-00 lead and then lost 4 consecutive games.

- That was, beyond any doubt, the best match I've played this week. Giraldo doesn't have a particularity good serve which is why I tried attacking his second serve as much as I could. I was focused from start till finish but I'm particularly happy about how convincing the win was because it was quite windy, which can be tricky - the Brazilian said.

Unlike Bellucci, who won his semifinal match easily, Sousa barely managed to get past Delbonis, who failed after the great win over Wawrinka. Both players finished with the same number of total points (89), which speaks volumes of how close the match was. The Portuguese opened the match better to convert a break point early on and take the first set after 35 minutes. Delbonis managed to win three consecutive games in the second set (two of which were opponent's service games) and save a break point.

Even tough Sousa seemed tired in the decider and struggled to win his service games, he didn't offer the opponent a single break point. But that was mostly down to Delbonis' as he failed to take advantage of the chances he had. Serving to stay in the match when final is at stake is not easy and Delbonis' final service game was a very good proof for that. He allowed Wawrinka to convert a break point in the very final service game as well but luckily, the Swiss helped him get through. Sousa, on the other hand, fought and gave everything he had and even slipped and fell at match point but nothing could stop him from firing that shot back. The Argentine made a mistake after that and things were settled.

- I fell and I have no idea how I managed to get that shot over. I gave it my best and Delbonis made a mistake after that - the Portuguese said about the match-point and added:

- I'm proud. I saved 4 match points the day before and then won another match after a great fight. I'm happy to be in another final. I'm not to meet Bellucci and even though we never played head-to-head, I know him. We speak the same language.

As aforementioned, Bellucci had three ATP titles, two of which are from Switzerland. He won Gstaad three years ago and in 2009. He lost two finals, one of which indoors. Sousa, on the other hand, played one ATP final and won it. It was against the unluckiest man on tour Bennetau, who is still without a title despite having a match-point when serving. The Portuguese lost the two finals last year, both convincingly. We can say Bellucci left a better impression this week. He is definitely better rested but we need to wait and see whether fierceness can get Sousa through for the third straight match.
