Leonardo Mayer - Dominic Thiem (7:6 5:7 6:7)

Thiem: I'll be very disappointed if I lose

  • Published:

The Austrian passed the mental test against Isner and broke him with his weapon. This year the American lost only four tie-breaks, and won 26. Mayer managed to save 20 break-points this week, out of which 11 were against Coric. He converted both of his break points

Thiem reacted really good here in Nice when it comes to game. He's been playing really well the entire week, and beating Isner in the semi-finals confirmed that. There's no mentally more demanding test than the American. Dominic passed that test with flying colors since there were a couple of situations in which he had to show all he's got.

After saving a break-point in the second game of the match, the Austrian stabilized on the serve. As the part was coming to its end, he became more dangerous on the return. In the ninth game he was at 00-40. Isner saved things with three great serves, but not for long. In the 11th game the Austrian continued with the pressure and earned two additional tied break-points. Isner saved that too, and then another two, but he let the serve down in the fifth. In moments when the American was serving great, Thiem stayed calm at break-chances. He relied on the second serve's return after which he won 74% of points. He waited for his chance in the exchanges and lived to see it.

Still, after the turnover something happened, as often is. After the break's catharsis, Thiem lost the first serve on the set-serve. Isner used that with his aggressiveness and with one double by the Austrian took the match into a tie-break. Isner had a 26-4 record of won and lost tie-breaks this season, but we have to point out Thiem was on the same level with 15-1. That proved to be key, although drama was yet again in the picture. Isner gave away a mini-break with a missed "smash" which rarely happens to him, and Thiem made a double fault on the set-point. Still, thanks to a good return of the second serve, the Austrian managed to take the first set after which everything was easier.

The pressure was off. He used Isner's lack of concentration at the beginning of the second part, turned things around and took the lead with 3-0. By the end of the match he had a chance for a double break, but he failed at it Still, there was no reason to be sad. He served great and during the second part he lost only four serve points.

- I don't beat player like he is every day. It was really hard to reach break-points against him, and he quickly erased those with aces. But I was ready for that and I was focused - said Thiem, and added:

- The second set started out really good for me He had problems on the serve and I took my chance. I'm really happy that I won and I'm looking forward to tomorrow's finals.

Dominic really does have reason to be happy. We can say he did everything Isner's opponent is supposed to do. He limited him on the second serve and didn't fall mentally when Isner scored aces on break-points or serves. Thiem passed the exam and looked like a player who knows what to do at any given moment.

This will be the Austrian's second finals in his career after Kitzbuhel last year.

- It's going to be a bit different than it was last year because then I played in front of the home audience. I don't play finals every week, so I'm very pleased. But, I would be very disappointed if I were to lose tomorrow. Now I'm more experienced because I already have one finals behind me I don't have an opponent I would like to face in the finals, but I'm ready for it - said Thiem.

The Austrian is up against Leo Mayer in the finals. He was partly Isner in his semi-finals match. The Argentinian was really a "clutch". Although beating Coric looks like a routine thing, that was all but. He needed quite a bit of luck to reach these finals.

From the very start it was obvious that the Croat could regret missed opportunities. In the first and the fifth game he had one break-point, but didn't use them. He was more precise on the return, but everything fell apart when he served for a stay in the set in the 10th game. Up until that moment he missed five points on the return, but then he offered a single break-point and lost it, which cost him the set. In the second part the story continued. Mayer used a single-break point in the second game, was in advance, and then tried to save his skin until the end of the meeting. In total he defended nine break-points in three different games on his way to victory. Mostly those were really good serves, but in a couple of them Borna had chances, so he could ask himself a couple of questions. Mayer was really "clutch". He wouldn't serve well until break-points, and he pulled out the most he could out of them.

- I'm really lucky because Coric will soon become a great player. I was lucky because I saved a lot of break-points. I've progressed, I play better each year and I feel good, so I'm pleased - said Mayer.

Interestingly, the Argentinian didn't lose his serve once on his way to the finals. However, there were chances for that to happen. He saved 20/20 break-points, and all in only three matches. Neither Pouille, nor Monaco, nor Coric weren't focused. Besides, in the semi-finals match Mayer had 2/2 on break-points. Coric 0/11. Now he's up for new finals against Thiem who showed a lot in Nice and when he's in rhythm, he looks very dangerous.

Last year the two of them played two head-to-heads. They shared a win, and we should expect a similar game as the first two times. Thiem is, technically, more polished with a better "all round" game. Mayer is a player with a "heavier" hand and more prominent weapons on the serve and forehand. One such player was outplayed by Thiem yesterday mentally. However, you can't save all 20 break-points in one week without confidence, and it's obvious Mayer has it. Still, that confidence is about to face its biggest challenge...
