Viktor Troicki - Jan-Lennard Struff (6:2 6:1 6:7 6:1)

Struff without an ATP win this season

  • Published:

Struff has a lot of confidence struggles, which is why he loses close matches. That happened last week again when he struggled with a cold. Troicki finally tied wins, the first time since Davis Cup but his form is still not at the right level. He is a heavy favorite here regardless since he's been doing well at Roland Garros for years

Even though he's still Top 35, we can say without any doubt that Troicki is in crisis. He tied wins in the Davis Cup match against Croatia but it took him two months to do that again. Things seemed ideal because he played the first tournament of the last season late July, which meant each good result in the period before July of this season would get him points and improvement in ranking. But, Serbia's players seemed to have taken things too lightly as eh did almost nothing over the past few months. While things were tough right after he came back after the suspension, Troicki was doing his best.

- I'm Top 40 again but I'm not stopping. I don't have any points to defend for a long time but major tournaments are coming up and I'll have a lot of chances for new points - Troicki said.

Indian Wells was a proof that Troicki wasn't at his top level. He was powerless against Ramos, who prefers different conditions. Nishikori gave him a lesson in tennis but he was probably more concerned about the defeats to Gimeno and Estrella. He pulled out of doubles tournament in Bucharest with back problems as the official reason but it felt more like he wasn't interested in staying after the defeat in singles. Gimeno allowed him to get 4 games i the last  2 sets. Troicki missed out on two break-points against Estrella in Munich and the defeat to Monfils is a consequence of a totally bland performance. Things got better in Rome even though he could have lost first round match there as well. Instead, he won the nerve-wrecking match against Tomic (third straight defeat in third set tie-break for the Australian). The win over Lopez wasn't great either because he's always bad in Rome. Nishikori beat Troicki once again, not leaving him with any chance of getting so much as a set.

Struff definitely has problems with confidence. The young German opened the season badly to do the indoor part of the season poorly even though expectations were high. He played ATP tournaments only and that is why doing a challenger in Germany two weeks ago was a good idea. He didn't tie wins until Heilbronn but managed to reach the semifinals there. He won 2 matches in three sets, which is the type of matches he used to always lose. That restored some of the lost confidence. The 33 ATP points he won will help him keep the Top 100 status for a while longer. He lost to Zverev in semifinals after which his opponent said:

- Struff and I are good friends and we often have practice sessions together. Luckily, I played the best match of the week because the second set was close.

The German lost 4 first round matches ahead of that challenger, beating only Becker in the States. His confidence struggles were obvious once again in Geneva. He had a good draw in Youzhny, who is doing badly but he went on to lose both sets in tie-break. That is clearly the consequence of not having much confidence. But the German had a different pretext:

- I got got sick the night before the match. I tried to fight but it didn't work. I'm sorry for it because it was a great tournament.

This is the first match between Troicki and Struff. Both are far from their top performances but Troicki is more successful here. He was never knocked out in first rounds over the past 6 years, having reached the 4th round the last three times. He beat Cilic, Bellucci, and Dolgopolov, while losing only to players better than himself. Struff beat only Oliveti in Roland Garros main draw. He is 0-5 on clay at ATP level this season.
