Wawrinka mediocre again and again without lost serve

Gasquet has had a déjà vu. He missed out on 9 match points against Kyrgioos last season. This one, he missed out on only two but saved two set-points that would have forced the fifth set. Even though Goffin had a chance in all three sets, Wawrinka won all three. The Roland Garros champion is bursting with confidence in the key moments

Goffin managed to win Wawrinka's service game, which is what the first three opponents failed to do. The Belgian still lost in straight sets despite putting up a good fight throughout the match. The Swiss won the first two sets in tie-break while winning the last 4 games of the match in set three. 

Each time, Wawrinka managed to get the level of his game up when necessary, in the key moments. He was a break ahead in the second set and had two break-points at 5-5. He opened the tie-break with a 3-0 lead but then missed out on a break-point. Goffin had a set-point of his own but then lost three straight points. Third set was a lot like that since he took a 4-2 lead, which forced Wawrinka to take it up a notch. He fired more winners, had more errors as well but again had the upper hand on serve. He won 83% of first set points, which the Belgian couldn't stand up to. 

- It was tough but I won in straight sets and that's great, especially because I didn't move as well as in the first rounds - Wawrinka said even though he once again proved that a mediocre performance can see him beat a tricky opponent in straight sets. 

Déjà vu is a French expression which means already seen. Gasquet must have felt like he was reliving his match from last season when he missed out on two straight match points in the third set. Kyrgios forced the fourth set and everything started looking like their last season's match in which he saved 9 match points and made a comeback after being down 2-0 in sets.

Gasquet had everything in his own hands. He lost the opening two games but got back in the match immediately and converted a break points later on to avoid the tie-break. He sailed through the second set with Kyrgios' help. The Australian got into new altercations with the umpire which cost him focus. But that threw Gasquet off his rhythm a bit as well. That is why the third set had so many chances on both sides. It seemed like Kyrgios was headed into another miracle but the Frenchman clearly had luck on his side this time. He managed to save two set points that would have seen Kyrgios force the fifth set and won 4 straight points. He could not started celebrating until the hawk eye gave its verdict. It was favorable for Gasquet, who reached quarterfinals after firing almost 70 winners, made only 21 unforced error. Realistically, he should have won in straight sets. 

- I don't know how many times I was down in the fourth set but I know it's a lot. I'm past that now and I'm moving forward under no pressure - Gasquet said after meeting the unpredictable young Australian and added:

- I did think about last year's defeat a bit. I was impossible not to after losing the third set like that. I smashed the racket, I really needed to do that. Luckily, Kyrgios made two errors on his two set points in the fourth set. My feet would hurt from time to time and it's good I didn't have to play the fifth set.

Wawrinka reached Wimbledon QFs for the second straight year. Gasquet reached semifinals but then got knocked out in the fourth round 3 times in a row. He was never the player for Grand Slam second week. Not only because of his game, which is clearly at a high level, but because of lack of confidence. That saw his complicate the Kyrgios match. Wawrinka, on the other hand, was never more powerful mentally, which is his greatest advantage here. He has the charisma of a player who can go all the way, who does go all the way.
