Tomas Berdych - Gilles Simon (3:6 3:6 2:6)

The Czech almost forced into the fifth set by Andujar

  • Published:

Simon and Monfils finsihed with similar numbers as Simon in the end recorded only two points more. But he displayed mental toughness and once again proved he has a lot more confidence than last year. Andujar had a 5-3 lead in the fourth set, Berdych turned it around but admitted to having had a bad day

Andujar had one grass court win and 13 straight defeats a week ago on this surface. He then surprisingly recorded two wins and proved he's got the game but lack the confidence. Berdych lost to the Spaniard in Valencia last season, later saying the circumstances were special. He might have lacked motivation back then but there were no excuses this time. Anujar was very close to forcing the fifth match.

The Czech has a very simple yet very efficient game plan. The problem is, he doesn't have too many options when losing rhythm. Andujar's quality might have surprised him a bit, the wind might have been a bit of a problem, but it still seemed like he was in control after losing the first set. He opened the second one fiercely and lost only 2 games in two sets to once again experience a decline in the 4th one. Luckily for Berdych, Andujar failed to use the 5-3 lead to force the fifth set. the Czech won two points on return in tie-break, while winning his service points, which saw him win.

- I was not surprised by the result, it was one of those days when nothing worked. At least I know what to work on. As for the first set, the conditions were tricky and he clealry adjusted to them better - Berdych said about his performance against Andujar.

Simon beat Monfils in the fifth set. Given their usual performances, more than three hours on the court seem like a one-sided win. Monfils played an aggressive game and took more risk than on other surfaces. The reason is footwork. He always made it very clear that footwork was a problem for him on grass court, which got very obvious in the Simon match.

As per usual, Simon was very patient and then, in the fifth set, proved why he's once again fighting for the Top 10 status. He took a 3-1 lead and then saved three break point to finish Monfils off with another break. Both players won 40% of points on return, both converted 5 out of 12 break points but Simon won a total of two points more and the final, most important one.

- Playing Geal is very difficult because he has so many weapons and you can always get something you don't expect. It was close but my game on grass court is getting better and I feel great on the court physically. I'm ready for the second week - Simon said, bursting with confidence. He is now to meet an even more aggressive opponent:

- I'm on a good record with Berdych. He limited me to only a handful of games the last time so I have to be careful. Also, I have to do my best if I want to reach the next round. It's good that I'm close to that level.

The Frenchman is 6-4 in head-to-head matches but Berdych limited him to only three games in this season's Rotterdam semifinals. Simon was not at his best level physically but more importantly, Berdych was doing better back then compared to the last few days.
