Agnieszka Radwanska - Jelena Janković (7:5 6:4)

Jankovic recorded the most surprising win at this season's Wimbledon

  • Published:

Jelena knocked out the defending champion Kvitova, who was untouchable in the previous matches, from the third round, having displayed a great game. It was the best possible announcement for her match against Radwanska, who is the favorite today

Petra Kvitova didn't play any preparation matches ahead of Wimbledon but it was very clear she didn't have to. She won the title here last year and dispalyed the kind of dominance that made it clear she was after another title in the first two rounds here. That is why no one could have imagined Jelena Jankovic would stop her in the third round. That was the greatest win for the Serb on grass court in the last 8 years. Petra won the first set and took a 4-2 lead in the second one but simply stopped playing at that point.

Jankovic was getting increasingly better at reading her game, managing to prolong the rallies more as the match advanced. Kvitova was making more and more mistakes, thus putting extra pressure on herself. She was the inferior player the rest of the match, having finished the third set with only about 50% of first serves and didn't fire a single ace. Jankovic was better, driving the opponent crazy through deep shots, not allowing her a single break point in the final match. She simply managed to take initiative late in the second set, then take advantage of Kvitova's nervousness to break her down.

- I still don't know what to say, I'm so excited. I'm tough to play on grass court for me, it just doesn't feel natural and I've always done badly here the last few years. I always think I'm going to win, regardless of how I or the opponent play. Kvitova was amazing and she's in great form. I tried to focus only on the next point, stay positive and fight. That paid off in the end. I knew I had her as soon as I won the second set. The win over a two-time winner gives you a lot of confidence. I hope I can keep the streak going - Jelena said after the win.

Radwanska, on the other hand, took advantage of the good draw and left Casey Dellacqua without a chance. After winning the first set easily 6-1, she lagged being in the second one (0-4) to go on and win 6 straight games and got the job done without any drama. She was once again confident in rallies and too intelligent for the Australian who finished with 32 unforced errors, thus helping Radwanska a lot. Radwanska has only 17 unforced mistakes from her 3 matches in London. She is back in form and is doing brilliantly. The only segment she could improve still is serve as she still lacks consistency there.

- I feel much better than early this year. Everything is easier on grass court. It's always disappointing to lose in Grand Slam first round but a few days off helped, just like Nottingham - Radwanska said.

She is the favorite today because her game is incredibly consistent. Jankovic will not be able to rely on unforced errors like against Kvitova, but she will have more chance on return now. We are in for a close match between two players who should be equal in longer rallies. Also, there should be plenty of chances on return.
