Alexander Zverev - Dimitar Kuzmanov (6:0 1:6 6:3)

Zverev thinks fondly of Braunschweig

  • Published:

Last year the German came here as a player outside of Top 600, won the title, showed his talent for the whole world to see and only a year later he's a firm Top 100 and the third seed

Young Zverev will definitely fondly remember of Braunschweig. Last year, on these very courts, he became prominent to those who didn't really follow his junior career. At the time he got a wildcard and surprised everyone in the first round when he beat Kamke, who was at the time among the Top 100.

The young German didn't stop there but he also won his premiere title, and on his way towards it he beat Souza, Golubev and Mathieu. At that moment those players were the absolute favorites against him. Later the German reached the ATP 500 Hamburg semi-finals and was no longer unnoticeable. And that's his biggest success. But Braunschweig will always be his first bigger title.

At the time when he reached Braunschweig last year he was outside of the Top 600, and now he firmly stands among the Top 100. That tells us enough how far he's come. At the time he was an unknown perspective player, and now he's the third seed.

- Of course I want to defend the title, but it's going to be hard because the draw is strong. This is one of the toughest challengers in the world. Last year's win was very important for me and I will always remember it. It was a start of a great summer and it gave me lots of confidence. I learned how to hold the rhythm on this level - said Zverev prior to the start of the tournament.

Zverev is coming here after five grass ATP wins which is not a bad score at all. He already established himself a bit as the ATP level and here, unlike last year, is surely one of the favorites. Let's add how in the last two clay challengers he played the semi-finals and won the title.

As for his today's opponent, Kuzmanov, we're talking about a tennis player who spent most of his career on a futures level. He has impressive eight titles on it, but only one was this year. Still, on this level, on challengers, he's far more inexperienced. He's trying to make the transition, but it's not working out for him.

It's enough to say that in his career he had only four challenger matches, out of which three ended up in him being defeated. The only win came this season when he let an anonymous Turk outside of Top 700 take four games. That win has no value. The other three matches he lost smoothly to Kavcic; Cervantes let him have only four games, and Brkic lost a tie-break and then smoothly beat him, and on hardcourt, even though he's primarily a clay player.

At least he passed the qualifications here. In the first round he was the huge favorite and had no problems. In the second he lost a tie-break and dropped only two games until the end of the match. This is the second time in his career that he's passed the qualifications of a challenger which also tells us certain things. Of course, the difference in quality is evident today and it's not a question whether Zverev will pass, but what the difference in score will be.
