Pablo Andujar - Thomaz Bellucci (6:3 4:6 1:6)

Andujar and Belluci have three titles in Gstaad combined

  • Published:

Bellucci is 4-2 in head-to-head matches, which were rarely one-sided wins. They played five sets in Davis Cup last season after the Spaniard had a 2-0 lead in sets and a break in the third one. He ended up losing the match after missing out on a few match points

Andujar once again lost the fifth crucial match for his Davis Cup team against Russia. There was not time to lament that since he had to go to Gstaad only a week later to try and defend the title. Of course, he's not in a great rhythm, he didn't play on clay for a long time and met Lajovic, who spent most of the last 20 days on that surface.

It is therefore not surprising taht the Spaniard struggled at the start of their match. There were no break points in the first 10 games but Andujar managed to break Lajovic in the 11th game and won the opener. Things were much easier in the second set for him.

Andujar went on to have break points in each of the five sets the Serbian had. He finally managed to convert a break point in the 5th set and won in the end after the match got suspended twice due to rain.

- It was not good at first. I had a lot of doubts. I'm, of course, very happy with the final result. I did well at important points in the first set and got a bit lucky. I have to play as much as possible to find rhythm - Andujar said and added:

- It was difficult to find focus against after the match was resumed. The change in conditions only increased the tension. I had to warm up like five times today.

The win is the only thing that matters in the end. His game from the second set was good and that is what he should aspire to. The first two rounds are most important especially when a player has not played on a certain surface for a long time. We can therefore say that the Spaniard did very well.

Bellucci played two matches here so far. Gstaad was always a good place for him since he won it twice and he said at the very start that the conditions here remind him of his native Sao Paulo. It is therefore not surprising that he often did well here. He recorded two easy wins, even though that was never an easy thing for him. Since we know what Bellucci is like, those easy wins mean a lot.

After sailing past the potentially tricky Coppejans, he beat Roberto in the second round after taking a 5-0 lead in the first set and 4-0 in the second one.

- I started off well, with high intensity and consistency. I controlled the match from start till finish. It was a good performance - the Brazilian said.

We have no choice but to agree with him. He did well but that is not surprising in Gstaad. Andujar and Bellucci played quite a few head-to-head matches. The Brazilian is 4-2 but their matches were rarely one-sided wins. Andujar took a 2-0 lead in sets and had a break in the third one in the one that took place last season (DC) but in the end lost. On top of that, the three of them have three titles in Gstaad combined. Bellucci has two, while Andujar won it last season.
