Fabio Fognini - Lucas Pouille (6:2 7:6)

Pouille beat Paire in staright sets

  • Published:

Fognini is happy with his game this week, and rightfully so. Pouille beat Monaco and Paire and only confirmed his talent

Fognini played three matches in Hamburg, and all three against opponents he never lost a match to before. He had 4-0 against Chardy, 6-0 against Ramos, and 5-0 against Bedene. He beat the first two in three sets, and who knows, maybe that mentality of the successful H2H played a role. Either way, he fixed his score against the Brit in the quarterfinal, as well.

Bedene did start the match a bit better. He lead 1-3 with a break, but Fognini took matters to his own hands then. He got that break back, and then made another one at 4-4, winning the first set in the end. He started the second set firmly with his serve. There were no break-points until 4*-5. The Brit had a set-point then, Fognini saved it and then got the only break of the set in the next game. He ended it by serving for the win.

Even though Aljaž threatened and had his chances, and could have easily taken the match to the third set, Fognini proved he had more quality and that decided the match.

- I'm happy to be in the semifinal here again. I'm happy with my performance because I played good tennis, especially the forehand. I've got one more day tomorrow, and I can fix my game and try to get to my second Hamburg final - Fognini said.

His first three matches were against his old "customers", let's say, but now he'll face Pouille. He didn't get many chances to play him because Pouille is quite young. He's got a lot of potential, but he mostly played the challengers. However, the young French confirmed his quality and talent once again, and got to the semifinal here, the best success of his career.

He passed the qualifiers first, and then beat Cervantes in the first round of Hamburg. The match could have gone to the third set, but Lucas played the key moments great. After that, he beat Monaco who was dealing with some problems, and yesterday, he beat his compatriot Paire who came to Hamburg carried by the momentum after winning Bastad last week.

Still, it was clear from the beginning that Pouille has his chance. His serve was more secure, he oscillated less, and Paire had one of those days. Pouille won the first set easily, without giving a break-point. He continued the second set in the same fashion, and offered the only break-point at the match-serve when he had a double break advantage. His performance was convincing, but there are similarities to Paire. Both are aggressive, talented, but often lack the will, so they oscillate. But, when they're playing their game, they're really good.

- I knew it'll be hard. I was ready for it. I managed to play my best tennis today. It was a good day. This will improve my ranking a lot. This was a great week, and I'm hoping to get to the final - Pouille said. He beat Fognini in two tie-breaks at the last year's Parisian Masters.
