Gilles Muller - Marcos Baghdatis (7:6 3:6 6:7)

Both opponents looking for their first ATP final this season

  • Published:

Both are in very good form this season but have never managed to get past the semifinals. One of them is bound to take it to the next level today, which is very much well-deserved given their performances in Atlanta. Baghdatis is playing a very good game while Muller serves brilliantly. He allowed a single break point in three of his matches so far

There is no doubt that Muller is playing his top season so far. He's recorded 20 ATP wins and a few quarterfinals and semifinals from that level already. There were no finals for him this season but there is still time, especially when he's playing like this.

His first chance for reaching the final is a match against Baghdatis in Atlanta today. He must be very fond of this tournament since he already has a semifinal and a final here and has been doing great this year. Out of all the players who made it this far, Muller has done it in the most impressive manner. He recorded three wins and allowed his opponents a single break-point. In other words, Muller's serves are great.

He won 27 first serve points against Soeda yesterday, while recording an efficiency of 60% on second serve. He limited the opponent to a much more modest 36% in that segment and overall did much better on return. He had a total of 9 break points, three of which he used for an easy win.

The well-experienced Baghdatis can be happy with his season as well and seems to be back on track again. This tournament only goes to confirm he has his confidence and good game back after spending most of the last season at challenger level.

After the slip in Bogota last week, Baghdatis found rhythm here and recorded 3 good wins. He has definitely had the toughest draw when it comes to quarter finalists since he faced Krajicek, Groth, and Pospisil.

Following a convincing win over Krajicek, Marcos went on to meet two great servers and once again confirmed he has what it takes for such players. Pospisil allowed him 9 break points yesterday, two of which Baghdatis converted. That and one tie-break were enough for a close straight sets win. Baghdatis won 75% of first serve points compared to opponents' 82% but his second serve efficiency was much better, meaning he was dominant in longer rallies.

It was overall another good performance by the Cypriot, who is now to play his third ATP semifinal of the season. He has not yet reached a final and has had a tougher road to it. Both left a very good impression here, which is why a close, tough match with very good and stable serves is expected.
