Pierre-Hugues Herbert - Kevin Anderson (4:6 5:7)

9th match for Herbert in the last 8 days

  • Published:

Anderson is to play his tenth ATP final, while Herbert will play his first one ever. The Frenchman started this tournmaent in qualifing rounds and won the last two matches after making great comebacks, especially yesterday when Johnson was headed for a win. The South American lost both of this final this season, but to Nishikori and Murray. This time around, he is the heavy favorite

It seems like Johnson will wait for his first ever ATP finals for a while longer. He had match points for it in Atlanta, while seemed to be headed for it here against Herbert. His serve, especially in these conditions, was his great advantage here, as well as the fact the Frenchman already played a lot of matches here (started with qualifying round), meaning fatigue could have played a role for him. But it didn't as he managed to make a comeback for the best result in his carrier.

The American seemed invincible in the first set. He lost only three points, two of which on account of double faults. Johnson took a 2-0 lead and then missed out on some break points. That turned out to be crucial as only a few games later, the opponent broke him for the first time in the match. Herbert had four set points in the tie-break and used the fourth one. He tied the score and sailed through the decider. Johnson was broken early on and there was nothing he could have done.

- In France we call it a diesel start. It’s not always easy to find the rhythm right away. Steve served incredibly in the first set. I could hardly put a ball in the court. Then in the second set I played one amazing return game and the momentum just changed. It gave me confidence. I broke with three return winners so it wasn’t his bad play. After that I told myself that I could win it - Herbert said after reaching his first ever final and added:

- I'm looking forward to it. Maybe this time I can do better in the first set.

Herbert took advantage of the fact it's only a week before the Grand Slam, meaning all the top players were not too interested in this tournament. His next opponent Anderson is Top 15 but he doesn't win titles. He is the No.2 seed here and the fact the top seed crashed out early on made him the main contender for the title.

The South African opened the match with three break points. He saved them but it took him longer to break Jaziri but still won in straight sets.

- Jaziri opened the match aggressively. That surprised me because I was more defense oriented in the last match. I adjusted, focused on my serve and waited for the chance. I had it at set point when he double faulted - Anderson said, while Jaziri complained about fatigue.

Herbert is in an even worse situation fatigue-wise. He will most likely be full of adrenaline early on but fatigue could play the crucial role later on, especially if he doesn't start like he expects to. He managed to make a comeback yesterday to break Johnson. Anderson has much more experience. Even though he won only two titles in 10 finals, he mostly lost to top players. This year to Murray and Nishikori and is now to meet the qualifier for whom this will be the 9th match in 8 days.
