Daniel Munoz-De La Nava - Andrey Kuznetsov (4:6 6:3 1:6)

Both profited in Manerbio

  • Published:

Munoz entered the Top 100 here thanks to good results. Kuznetsov would do the same if he wins the title. They're very experienced in situations like this and this is the Spaniard's 12th challenger finals. 10th for the Russian

From the start of the Manebrio tournament, it somehow seemed that Kuznetsov was meant to at least reach finals. The impression was right and the Russian reached the finals without a lost set, which is a nice intro for the duel against Munoza De La Nava.

In the first round he beat Veic without a lost set. It was a great start of the tournament, and it continued with wins against Silva and Saez. Both took one set into a tie-break, but they didn't really play. Silva made a single turnover in the whole match, and Saez lost a game in the second set and won only four points in the whole set. Considering the impressions, but also the level of tennis he was playing, Kuznetsov was a favorite in the semi-finals against Giustino. The lack of quality and obvious fatigue didn't make any trouble for the Russian.

From the very start it was a one-way street. The Russian took the lead with 3-0, and until the end of the set he confirmed the first set with a new turnover. In the second set he calmed down a bit, but with one break in the seventh game he did the job. During the whole math he didn't once lose his serve, and he offered a single-break point, all for a convincing win.

Kuznetsov decided to stay on clay and not head onto the US Open qualifications. That paid off from the start. Now he's one win away from entering the Top 100. Munoz De La Nava achieved that by winning in the quarter-finals and he entered the Top 100 for the first time, at 33 years old. He's one of those late bloomers. That's only the continuing of his great challengers in 2015, and we can't say he didn't deserve it.

In the first two rounds the Spaniard didn't have too many problems. He beat Bossel and Brands without a lost serve, and even though the German took the first set into a tie-break and had his chances, he lost the break-point. Once more it showed that the return is his weak point. And while he didn't have problems in the first two rounds, there was trouble against Gaio in the quarter-finals. The Italian had a break advantage in the third set, but he failed in the tie-break. He had 11 break-points, but he used only three. The Spaniard avoided a bullet there, and then in the semi-finals against Volandri he had no problems.

The Italian, according to his own words, had problems with his shoulder from the start of the tournament. He lost the first set, and then the serve in the second and decided to forfeit. That's how Daniel won three out of four matches here without losing the first hit.

Kuznetsov and Munoz played three head-to-heads. Interestingly, all three times were in 2012. All three times the Russian won, but every time in three sets. Both are very experienced in situations like these. For the Spaniard this is the 12th challenger finals, and 10th for the Russian. Even though Munoz has two titles this season, generally he has a weak score in final duels (3-8), while Kuznetsov's record is at 5-4.
