Lorenzo Giustino - Andrey Kuznetsov (1:6 4:6)

Kuznetsov after his 10th challenger final

  • Published:

The Russian got three wins without losing a set, and left his opponent in the second set with four points. Giustino started from the qualifiers and is now fighting for his first ever challenger final. Up to this tournament, he only had three challenger wins in 2015

The Russian was fighting to get to top 60 two years ago. He's got over 30 ATP wins, Davis Cup experience and can do a lot more than struggle at the challengers. But, he proved he can't do without this level. His goal is to get back to Top 100, and these tournaments can help him do that. He didn't care about the US Open qualifiers, or hardcourt. Clay is his game. Besides, he played the third round of Roland Garros this year. That makes him an exception in this lot, a level above others.

He lost to Arnaboldi last week. This week, he's got three straight set wins in a row. He was an extreme favorite each time, though. Especially in the quarterfinal. The Chilean Saez threw two surprises on his way to that match. He made Kuznetsov struggle in the first set, but lost after that. He was even leading the first set 4-2, but there was no drama in the tie-break. Saez had two points, and then didn't win a single game in the second set. Kuznetsov let him get four points in the second set.

Giustino played a few ATP qualifiers this season. He passed them in Bucharest, then won two games against Garcia-Lopez. He was losing challenger qualifiers, too, and didn't get further than a quarterfinal this season, until this week. He couldn't complain about his lot here. A weaker compatriot in the first round, then Podlipnik who's making progress but still isn't a consistent challenger player, and De Schepper in the end. De Schepper's reputation of a good server is fading slowly.

Even though the French got compared to Karlović from the beginning of his career, the only thing being the same between them this season is their height. De Schepper keeps struggling with saving his serve. Even Giustino became a danger with his return hits. He had 17 break-points. De Schepper was much more economic. Two chances, he used both, but even 14 saved break-points couldn't help him in the end. Even though the Italian lost the first set, and missed the first nine break-points in the second, the 10th one was crucial. It was also the set-point. Both kept their serve convincingly in the third set. De Schepper played one weak game, and that turned out to be the key. Giustino got a break there, and won only one point per other return games. It didn't matter because he was keeping his serve convincingly.

Kuznetsov will soon be after his 100th challenger win, and he's after the 10th challenger final of his young career, the second one this season. Giustino can't be compared in that regard. He's a year younger, and is still waiting for his first challenger final. Besides, he only got three challenger wins this year, up to Manerbio. He had a bit of luck with the lot here, but it seems this is where it ends. Besides, Kuznetsov beat him in both matches they played so far.
