Agnieszka Radwanska - Angelique Kerber (6:1 6:4)

Radwanska and Kerber played a brilliant match in Stanford this summer

  • Published:

Agnieszka played three aggressive players here, two of whom ended up retiring. Kerber, on the other hand, beat both of her opponents trhough an aggressive game. Aggrsesivness will be very important today, perhaps crucial. We saw 74 winners in their head-to-head match in Stanford combined

Quite a few players either pulled out or retired from their matches in Beijing this year. It's late in the year, it's been a long, tough and physically exhausting season, which many players, among them Radwanska, talked about. But she simply has to keep on playing to secure a spot in Singapore. She crashed out of Beijing second round last year but this year managed to take it one step further and make it into Top 8. The big question is, which players will even go to Singapore given all the injury struggles and other problems.

Agnieszka rallied past three players here to make it into QFs, two of whom retired from their matches. Coco first retired in the first round with an ankle injury and then Keys retired from the 3rd round match with a thigh injury.

- It was definitely a better match than yesterday. Sadly, this is no way in which you want to win but we know it's season end and there have been quite a few retirements. I hope it gets better soon - Radwanska said, adding that she is still racing for Singapore and that she now has more confidence.

Agnieszka took on three aggressive players in the opening three rounds. Coco and Keys didn't finish their matches while Barthel put up a good fight against Radwanska in three sets. The Pole talked about her potential next opponent too:

- I love watching Wozniacki and Kerber play. It's always interesting and it's always a great match. You always see a lot on the court and it's always a top level game. I think it will be a 50-50 match.

Agnieszka is on a 4-8 record against Wozniacki but she lost the last three matches in straight sets (her last win is from two and a half years ago). Her record against Kerber is 5-5 but they haven't met in two years before Stanford this season. Kerber won in Stanford in three sets in what was a very good match. The same was expected in the Kerber-Wozniacki match in Beijing, especially because of their previous head-to-head matches. Kerber, however, did almost brilliantly.

- I felt good from the start and I played my game until the end. I tried to focus on each and every point - Kerber said after firing 28 winners (and recording 21 error) to overpower Wozniacki once again:

- I'm a bit tired but I'm trying not to think about that. I look forward to meeting Agnieszka. I'll try to be aggressive and play like I played here the whole week. My goal is to win obviously.

Kerber finished their last meeting in Stanford with 38 winners and 32 errors, while Agnieszka had a 36-28 ratio. That says it all about what a good quality match it was. Kerber was the more aggressive player here both against Cibulkova and Wozniacki. Aggressiveness will be very important today as well, maybe every crucial.
