Stanislas Wawrinka - Nick Kyrgios (6:7 6:7)

Stan lacks match practice, but Nick is unpredictable

The Swiss was not happy with his tennis at the last three tournaments, not even in Dubai where he won the title, but things can fall in place quickly with him. Kyrgios won in the first round without giving a single break-point. Their two head-to-head matches ended with forfeits, and Nick was sick in London

Even though he recorded only four wins at the last four Series 1000 tournaments, Wawrinka was not interested in tournaments after Monte Carlo. He is now a Top 5 player, maybe he should be thinking differently. He is a player who needs rhythm, and his latest defeats were far from the performance expected from a double Grand Slam winner. Defeats against Goffin and Kuznetsov are surprises, as are only five games against Nadal. We have seen traces of the old Stan in that match, he was annoyed by the audience, and then after the defeat he talked more about the fans who cared more about food and wine than what was going on on the court. We will stick to the part concerning tennis.

- A bad day, that's for sure. I rushed too much after the weak start and I couldn't put my performance together, which is fatal against player like Nadal. I have to work on a few things which need to be fixed as soon as possible. I have a few weeks without tournaments ahead of me so I will have enough time to prepare for Madrid - said the Swiss after Monte Carlo, and then a few days ago he commented on the pressure that is growing as Roland Garros is coming close:

- I am always under pressure because that's the kind of player I am. I always want to play better, do more, and that creates pressure, but there is no other way to succeed. You have to want more. I want to do a good job in Madrid, get in the rhythm. 

Kyrgios is not nearly as successful on clay as Wawrinka, but he has an advantage here. Last week he won three matches, lost to the winner of the title, and here he already won one match, he showed that the conditions suit him. The Australian's strongest weapon is his serve, with sports insolence, so Pella didn't get a single break-point in the match. Kyrgios did not do a great job either, since we saw only one break in the match. 

The Australian and the Swiss have an interesting history. The story from Montreal is well known, that provocation toward Wawrinka's girlfriend. Before that Kyrgios played a weak match in London on grass-court, then blamed sickness, and he forfeited the last match because of his back. A few days ago he celebrated his birthday in Estoril with a win. When he was asked if he was happy about that, he said that he would rather be doing 50 other things on his birthdays than playing tennis. He should be motivated here, after all he is facing a Top 5 player. Unless he gets sick or injures his back again...
