Fabio Fognini - Kei Nishikori (2:6 6:3 5:7)

Nishikori: I have a chance of winning the title

  • Published:

Fognini rallied past Tomic who came here just to come here, without any competitive spirit. The last week was full of ups and downs for Fognini but he's still the man who beat Nadal twice on clay court last season. That is why Nishikori cannot be a heavy favorite here, regardless of the good form

The players from Asia rarely do well on clay court. Nishikori changed it all and we even say that clay court might be his best surface over the past few years. He's 27-6 since 2014 and just one defeat to a player outside of Top 10 (Klizan). He was recently very close of getting his third straight title in Barcelona. Nadal got in the way, but Nishikori put up a good fight even against him.

- Rafa played the key points better and ended up winning deservedly. Regardless of the defeat, I'm happy. I recorded 14 straight wins here and I keep on going with a lot of confidence - Nishikori said after Barcelona and then commented on his chances here:

- Even though I have good results on clay court, I still feel better on hard court. As for Madrid, I think I have a chance of winning the title if I play well. I've already reached the final here, the conditions suit me and I'm looking forward to my first match.

Fognini has already played one match here. One of the points from his match against Tomic went viral. It was the final point of the match when Fognini served and Tomic didn't even bother to try and return. He started walking towards the net to congratulate Fognini on the win while the ball was still in the air. Tomic had no motivation in that match and these are not his conditions.

That means, Fognini didn't really have a proper test. His performances in Munchen were at points like Tomic's performance in their head-to-head meeting. He won the first set and had a break in the second one against Kovalik to in the end barely win. Before that, he had the same thing against Kukushkin and had to save break points at 5-5. He did nothing against Kohlschreiber. That could be the consequence of the long match with Kovalik but once again, he simply seemed disinterested when things started going downhill. Something similar happened in Monte Carlo. However, Fognini beat Nadal twice on clay court last year. He can do that when motivated. For comparison's sake, Nishikori has a 1-9 record against Rafa.
