Wawrinka 4-0 in head-to-head matches

The Swiss displayed a much better tennis in the second round after a five-set thriller against Rosol. Chardy is progressing steadily so far, but in the previous stage of his career he won only one of nine sets he played against Wawrinka

Wawrinka created a sensation last year, he defeated Novak who was one step away from winning all Grand Slam titles. When you are the winner of a tournament this big, that beings even more responsibility, even more pressure and that was definitely obvious in Wawrinka's first match here. 

But he showed in that match that he is a great champion. He was down 1-2 in sets, not a pleasant situation to be in, but he improved his tennis, reduced the number of unforced errors and managed to make a comeback despite the fact that Rosol played a great match. 

It was obvious that the barrier and the initial pressure were gone so it was expected from the Swiss to improve almost all segments of his tennis in the next matches at Roland Garros. That happened and Taro Daniel paid the price in the second round. 

True, the Japanese provided some resistance at the start, he took the first set into tiebreak, he even missed a set-point, but he fell apart after he lost the first set. The Swiss, who is of course experienced and knows how to put pressure on his opponents, only used the momentum and in the next two sets confirmed his win. 

- There were some ups and downs, but I played a good match and I am happy that I finished the job in straight sets. I am feeling great - said Wawrinka. 

After he recorded some back-to-back wins in Rome recently, he also defeated a Top 20 player (Bautista-Agut), and it can be seen in Chardy's tennis that he gained more confidence. 

Two quality performances in which the Frenchman was highly focused and did not give much to his opponents. True, Mayer won a set in the first match, but the Argentinian was a Top 50 player until recently, and he is an unpleasant opponent at the start of the tournament. But Chardy won relatively easy and then used the favorable draw and defeated the lucky loser Pavlasek. 

A one-way street from start to finish. Pavlasek in the end won a double-digit number of games, and the impression is that he could have been limited to less, but the Frenchman simply played only as much as was needed to win in straight sets. He confirmed his quality, which is much bigger than the rival's and he is only one win away from defending last year's advancement to the Round of 16. 

But that's still far away since he will now face Wawrinka, the defending champion. And in their last 4 head-to-head matches the Frenchman won only one set, and not even as much in the two matches on clay.
