Tenis » Roland Garros (M), Clay, 3rd Round
27.05.2016. 14:15 Finished
Kei Nishikori - Fernando Verdasco (6:3 6:4 3:6 2:6 6:4)

Nishikori losing only to Djokovic and Murray on clay court since 2016

  • Published:

Both reached Round 3 without dropping a single set and interestingly, Verdasco won two out of three head-to-head matches

The win over Bolleli at the start was Kei Nishikori's 50th Grand Slam win. That is a big deal but even more importantly, he's made a name for himself on clay court over the past year and a half. He has no defeats to players outside of Top 15 during that time, which is more than enough to show how consistent he is.

That is why he's Top 10 today. After the win over Bolleli, who struggled with an injury recently, Kuznetsov should have been a much greater test. The Russian struck the first blow by converting a break point at the very start but didn't stay ahead very long.

Kei got his game up a notch later on to make a first set comeback and win it. He ended up winning the match in very convincing straight sets. Kuznetsov got a total of only three games.

- I had a much more serious rival today. He started off very well. I was a break down very soon. I managed to react quickly and did a very good job. Second and third sets were very good - Nishikori said.

Verdasco has been standing out mostly because he's so unpredictable the last few years. He probably deserves to be Top 10 quality-wise but he needs better mental aspect for that.

However, he has for now displayed only his good side in Paris. He reached this round in straight sets. The last opponent he beat was Ivan Dodig, who got limited to a total of only 6 games. Verdasco sailed through that match and has not displayed none of the so many times seen ups and down, which is why he's one of just a few players who have not yet dropped a single set here.

Interestingly, he has the lead in head-to-head matches (2-1). However, Nishikori is the favorite here as he has only three clay court defeats so far this season. All three are to Top 3 players Murray and Djokovic.
