John Isner - Andy Murray (6:7 4:6 3:6)

Murray had the best possible preparation for Isner against Karlovic

  • Published:

The Scotsman's wish came true after two marathon matches. He remained for a short time in game, ran over a kilometer, did a great job on the return, and now he's up against a very similar player when it comes to the serve. Isner lost the serve four times against Gabashvili, but he did far more in his clay career than Karlovic

After spending over seven hours on the court in the first two rounds, Murray was looking forward to the match with Karlovic. That wouldn't be the case otherwise, but after so much rushing in the first two matches, and the hard weeks in Madrid and Rome, he was looking forward to not playing long exchanges. He was right. He ran almost four kilometers against Bourgue, and against Karlovic it was barely a kilometer.

It's important to reach a break as soon as possible against big servers, to prevent them from getting into their rhythm. Murray did it in the first game. An excellent edition, and once more he confirmed his reputation as one of the best return players on the tour, especially in such conditions. Not one offered break-point, only four unforced errors and almost the same number of winners as Karlovic.

- I opened up the match great, and that's important against players such as Ivo. In the end there were problems. He didn't give up, so I can be pleased with a win in four sets. I wished for a shorter match and I got it. As for the returns, maybe that is my best weapon, but against Karlovic you often depend on him. He's simply that good a server - commented Murray the speedy win with three breaks.

Isner lost the serve four times against Gabashvili, more than Karlovic lost against Murray. But, the American slipped through. It's an atypical score for him considering that in five sets only the first one went into overtime. The reason was in the unpredictable Russian who in the end had the same number of points as Isner. The most bizzare moment of the match was the very end, when the American won six games in a row. He probably doesn't remember himself when was the last time he did it. That's an even bigger success because he has the disappointing 5-14 in the fifth set throughout his career. Now he's up against one of the best return players on the tour:

- I'm going to be very busy, that's certain, but Murray won't have it easy either. Even though I've lost all the head-to-heads against him, it was often the details that decided the winner. He played better at key points. Besides, that's why he's the second best player of the world.

Murray couldn't have had a better practice for Isner. Not only did he experience a similar serve in Karlovic, but he also did a great job and that will surely encourage him. Besides, the American never came further than the fourth round here. As for head-to-heads, the story is similar as with Karlovic. He won in all six, but this is their first clay match. Just like with Karlovic, Isner won three sets, and even eight went into overtime. Similar numbers were no help for Karlovic.
