Sabine Lisicki - Shelby Rogers (6:1 6:3)

Grass is Lisicki's favorite surface but...

The German is in horrible form. She lost to a clay court player in Mallorca on his favorite surface. Rogers doesn't have a great record but she is no defense-oriented. She reached Roland Garros final. Still, Lisciki is the favorite but this season is difficult to explain, as well as her last defeat

Lisicki has probably never come to Wimbledon with such bad form. Even though she struggled with an injury late last season, she cannot use that as an excuse anymore. The only truth here is that she is doing badly and things don't seem to be getting any better. Lisicki is 8-13 and has straight wins just once this season (Kuala Lumpur).

She was always prone to ups and downs but that means you sometimes play well and sometimes badly. However, Lisicki now plays only bad matches. Her coach paid the price to that. Lisicki now has a new coach for grass court season in which her expectations are high. She played a final in Wimbledon and has a 39-15 record in these conditions. That says it all. Lisicki is one of the hard hitters and always gets the best out of her game and surface. However, something is seriously not right, as the last tournament she played proved. 

Mallorca was the only tournament she played before Wimbledon. After a good win over Mladenovic, Lisicki lost to Duque-Marino, a clay court player, to confirm the bad rhythm. It's difficult to explain how exactly that happened but the German failed to convert any break points in the second and third set even though she had 6 chances. Sabine is one of the top grass court players over the past few years but she has never come here with lower expectations. 

Rogers played the final in Rio but didn't play against a Top 100 there. Before and after that, she did nothing special. Until Roland Garros. She beat Vesnina, Kvitova and Begu there and lost a tough match to Muguruza, who went on to win the title. It was a confirmation of her quality which has a few segments that work well on grass court. However, Rodgers has still never done well in these conditions. 

The American is 5-10 on grass court and 0-2 at WTA level. For example, she won only three games against Konjuh last season and then didn't get a single game against Petkovic. 

Her only match this season was the one against Mertens. She lost a close match and that is actually a better result than it might seem. Mertens did grass court season great but we still don't know what Rogers can do here. 

- I lost a match to Mertens, who has been doing great on grass the past few weeks. I'm happy to be here again - Shelby said.

Her results don't give her much reason to be happy. She was trashed last season but she has had injury struggles. On the other hand, she did reach RG quarterfinals, which deserves respect, especially since she is not a defense-oriented player. Lisciki doesn't win her matches easily anymore. As already mentioned, she lost to a clay court player on grass before this tournament.
