Fabio Fognini - Steve Johnson (6:4 6:4)

The Italian was still playing in Europe on clay court just two days ago

Fognini left a great impression and won his fourth title last week in Umag, but that is not in his favor here. He had only one day for the long trip and adaptation to different conditions. Johnson won't have those problems, but he did both of their head-to-heads so far

After two years, Fabio Fognini has again, for the fourth time, went all the way at an ATP tournament. Many will say not enough considering the talent of this, always interesting, 29-year-old, but not everything was ideal in the previous period. He even dropped out of the Top 30 this season, mostly because of weaker performances on hard surfaces. 

Fabio played only two hardcourt tournaments at the start of the year, and recorded only two wins, and he was on only two other grass-court tournaments other than that. He recorded onyl one win there, but he improved the impression in Umag. 

- A title is always a title and I happy because of it. This is the first one since I got married and I expect it will have a positive effect on the rest of he season. It was not easy against Martin since I knew I was the favorite and I couldn't afford a mistake - said Fognini who improved his ranking by 6 positions and is now 33rd. 

Even though the title suggests he is in good form, we have to admit that he is coming here with some big question marks. He played the final on Sunday in Europe on Clay, and he will now play hardcourt tournament in Canada. He traveled on Monday and the question is how fir will he be for the tournament in Toronto. So far he mostly lost in the second round here. 

Steve Johnson is not having such problems since he already played in Washington, and there he only continued his good form on grass-court. After he barely recorded back-to-back wins at the first 14 ATP tournaments this year, things turned around with the grass-court season. He went all the way in Nottingham, and reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon. 

His last tournament was in Washington, he recorded three wins. We should point out the one over Isner, but then he lost a similar match to Karlovic. If nothing else, at least he got an extra day to rest for this tournament where he will be playing for the first time. He does have experience against Fognini, but also two defeats from two matches. The more important one is last year's from US Open where he won only one set, even though he was a similar favorite as today. In the end, we should get back to last week's performances, and point out that he has an advantage in adaptation, and in rest it seems, since Fognini complained about fatigue even before Umag.
