Yuichi Sugita - Grigor Dimitrov (7:5 6:7 4:6)

Dimitrov keeping up with his disappointing season

  • Published:

Grigor has had a disappointing tournament in Washington while his opponent Sugita chases the Top 100

Dimitrov is on a 6-match losing run. It seemed like there is no light at the end of the tunnel for him but he did show some signs of improvement at Wimbledon. Unfortunately for him, it was nothing more than just signs as he lost to Johnson:

- I was not at the right level today. I started off well but as the match went on, Johnson was getting better. The match was also suspended many times due to rain but I think I definitely could have done more.

Even though it seemed that was the impulse he so desperately needed, the Bulgarian couldn't get out of his crisis and lost to Evans in the very first match.

The Brit has been in a good rhythm but no one expected him to just rally past Dimitrov like that. The Bulgarian couldn't do anything right and has finished with a lot of unforced errors. It seemed like he was on the right path but the previous week was another big blow for his confidence.

For years Sugita has been on the same schedule. He is managing to keep his ranking through challengers and an occasional ATP tournament with rather poor competition. The Japanese has gone well over 100 challenger wins but has mostly done rather badly at ATP tournaments, proving that challengers are his limit. There were some exceptions to that, of course, and Sugita himself is probably happy with the fact Top 100 status is reachable at the moment.

He has an ATP wins from Newport and has then beat Pospisil in Washington. As Ramos-Vinolas pulled out, he reached the main draw here, which is a big thing for him since new points would get him into Top 100. That is why his motivation won't be questionable here.
