Paire managed to make a comeback against Lajovic in yet another above-average performance after his opponent struggled with cramps. On the other hand, Baghdatis went past the confides and injured Bagnis easily

Paire has definitely taken a step back compared to the last season. He has done badly on hard court in the last month and a half (3-4) but things were slightly improve here in the first round.  

He managed to outsmart Lajovic in a match that went on for over two and a half hours. Lajovic wasn't able to take advantage of Paire's less than good performance. The Frenchman struggled with serving a lot (50 percent, 9 double faults) and dropped serve five times. But he was the better player in key moments.

- It was very tough, Lajovic is a good player. I expected to be playing better but the win is all that matters in the end - Paire said. He has two wins and six defeats against Top 50 players on hard court this season. 

His next opponent Baghdatis has made it into Top 50 after a rather good season. We can conclude that this is his most successful season in years. When it comes to the American hard court, there were no significant results but there were also no slips. He lost to better players at the last 3 tournaments and beat the weaker opponents. 

Bagnis was definitely one of those weaker opponents as he is mostly focused on clay court tournaments and has also struggled with some health problems here. He didn't want to miss out on the check for the first round as he made it into the main draw. 

But, as it turned out, he couldn't deal with Baghdatis. The difference in quality became more and more obvious as the match advanced. Also, Bagnis had some problems with the abdominal wall again and had to retire easily in the third set. Baghdatis went through and will now face Paire. He won their first head-to-head indoors but the Frenchman got back at him on clay court and hard court. It seems like this will be decided by a moment of inspiration by these two talented players.
