Both won the first two round matches easily

Coric retired 7 games into the match against the Spaniard. Estrella should have considered doing the same as he got less games than Borna in spite of playing the whole match

Sousa came to New York in poor form and has justified his bad results with knee problems which will need further medical attention after the tournament. However, after just one win in the last 5 matches, he limited Estrella to two games. It seems like the Dominican came to New York just to get the check:

- I'm very happy. I was dominant throughout the match. I set up my pace and controlled the game.

Regardless of the good ranking, he is 1-7 against Top 50 players this season. He beat only Pospisil who isn't even in Top 10 anymore. However, we do need to say that Sousa has played a lot of top opponents. 

Lopez played only 7 games in the previous round and got through. Coric clearly wasn't prepared enough after the knee injury in Cincinnati and was forced to retire at 4-3. Lopez didn't mind as the conditions are tough and this only gave him more time to prepare for the next opponent:

- I knew Borna was struggling with a knee injury but he seemed fine in the first few games. I guess he aggravated that injury. I'm to play a tough match now. Joao is a complete player. He beat Estrella easily, which is not easy (Lopez lost to him in Quito final last year).

He lost to Sousa in Tokyo last year, after playing the final in Malesia (indoors) just three days earlier.
