Petkovic and Bencic recorded straight wins only twice at the last 24 tournaments

Neither Petkovic nor Bencic did great at the start here, but that is no different to what they've been doing for weeks and months now

Petkovic hasn't recorded any great results over the past months. She was faced with an unfavorable draw at some tournaments but she also struggled against weaker opponents. She survived in the first match against Kucova here, after more than two hours on the court. Kucova served for the first set and had 17 break points but converted only 4 of them. She went 1/10 in the second set, Petkovic 3/4 and 6/11 overall. 

- There were ups and downs, of course but I'm happy with my attitude. I did a lot of things I had been working on - Petkovic said after the first round match. We should also note that she requested some eye drops after the 7th game. 

In the past two years here, she lost in the third round but this season, she came to New York after not recording straight wins at 13 tournaments. She is 4-3 on hard court against Top 30 players this season. In the last 4 such matches, she beat Safarova and lost to Agnieszka, Svitolina and Kvitova.

Bencic had just one win in the last 7 matches before US Open. She struggled with wrist problems, didn't go to Rio and squandered away a 5-2 lead in the third set against Flipkens. She said that US Open was a proof that her wrist is okay as she got back at Crawford for a defeat at the start of the season. The American won in two long sets back then while the Swiss won in three here. We need to point out that Crawford was one break up in the second and third set. 

- It was a tough battle and a battle against myself as well. I need to be patient after the break but I feel unhappy about the mistakes - the Swiss said after getting into the second round.

Bencic got through the second round here in the last two years but she recorded straight wins only once at the last 11 tournament. She beat Petkovic in Fed Cup this year (indoors) and is 2-5 against Top 50 players this year. She also has three straight wins to Jankovic, Vandeweghe and Babos.
